Asthma and Chiropractic Care

Asthma has become a large health concern for children in recent years. Over the past 20 years the incidence of asthma has doubled. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimated that in 1998, approximately 17,299,000 people in the United States, or 6.4% of the population, with cases among very young children up 160%. As reported in the June 16, 1999 issue of JAMA (Journal of the American Medical Association), the CDC also noted that between 1980 and 1994, the number of people self-reporting asthma grew 75%.

In a study conducted in 1996 by the Michigan Chiropractic Council (MCC), a panel of doctors performed an out-come assessment study to test the qualitative and quantitative effectiveness of chiropractic care on children with asthma. The high demand of parents seeking alternative care for pediatric asthma was shown by the overwhelming interest in the study. More than 500 parents called the MCC seeking to get their child involved in the chiropractic study.

The study, which took place during May and June of 1996, examined the chiropractic effectiveness in correcting the cause of asthma in patients from birth to age 17. The average age of the participant was 10 years. “After 30 days of chiropractic health care, patients averaged only one attack, whereas prior to the study they were experiencing more than four attacks,” said MCC Dr. Bob Graham, who directed the study. “Medications, which can be costly, were decreased by nearly 70 percent. Finally, patient satisfaction was rated 8.5 on a scale of 10.” More than 70 chiropractors from 62 cities in Michigan studied more than 80 children suffering from asthma.

The International Chiropractic Pediatric Association lists several studies on their web site (www.4icpa.org) discussing the benefits of chiropractic for children with asthma. The following are some of those excerpts:

“76.5% of patients with bronchial asthma said they benefited from chiropractic treatment. Peak flow rate and vital capacity increased after the third treatment. Significantly lower quality of life impairment rating scores were reported for 90.1% of children after 60 days of chiropractic care. During this same time period the average number of asthma attacks decreased an average of 44.9%, and asthma medication usage was decreased an average of 66.5%. Among parents of asthmatic children who had received chiropractic treatment, 92% considered this treatment beneficial.”

Asthma Study Shows Chiropractic Benefit

From the November / December 2000 issue of Today’s Chiropractic, comes a study report on Asthma. In the study, 47 patients were observed for a two year period. These patients had all been medically diagnosed with persistent asthma ranging from mild persistent in 11 cases, moderate persistent in 28 cases, to severe persistent in 8 cases. The care rendered consisted of specific chiropractic adjustments. The range of visits was from 14 to 44, with the average being 26 during the study period. Most patients in the study began care at a rate of 3 visits per week with this frequency being reduced after 4 to 8 initial weeks. The patient results were very good with all 47 of the study patients showing a marked improvement ranging from 87 to 100 percent.

Patient observed improvement was measured by both improvement in their symptoms as well as a decrease in their usage of acute asthma attack medication. Even more impressive was that all of the patients in the study reported maintaining their improvement after a two-year follow up.

Do you know someone who is suffering needlessly with Asthma? Have them come to our clinic to see if we can help make a difference in their life and health.

Eczema Natural Remedies

234214213431234124

Eczema (atopic dermatitis) is a skin condition that is a chronic allergic condition where the skin may develop areas that become an irritating itchy or scaly rash. Eczema can occur on almost any part of the body but is most common on the face, scalp, inside of elbows, knees, ankles, and hands. It typically appears as extremely itchy patches on the skin. Eczema can get worse when scratched; in fact, itchy skin may appear normal until scratched; the irritating action may then cause the characteristic rash and scales to develop. Eczema is particularly common in infants and children. A person’s risk of developing the problem also increases if he or she has a family history of eczema or allergic conditions such as asthma and hay fever.

Eczema is caused by a reaction similar to that of an allergy and can promote chronic inflammation. The condition will often wax and wane and accompany other allergic conditions such as asthma. In some cases, a specific substance, such as certain soaps, detergents, or metals, dust mites, and animal dander, can trigger eczema. Eczema can be worsened by dry climates, exposure to water, temperature changes, and stress.

Individuals with this condition should make lifestyle changes to their diet, add moderate exercise and avoid environmental toxins (toxic detergents, household cleaners, etc.). Examples include eliminating chemically sprayed vegetables and fruits, processed foods, junk foods, sugars and artificial sweeteners. Minimizing stress also has been shown to help suppress exacerbations.

Here are some helpful natural remedies to help with eczema:

  1. Treat the Gastro-Intestinal lining (gut walls). This is done by consuming bone broth, healthy fats, probiotics and fermented foods. More info can be learned from Natasha Campbell-McBride’s book Gut and Psychology Syndrome.
  2. Probiotics and probiotic-rich foods help provide additional and benefitial gut bacteria and helps heal the intestinal walls. The probiotic rich foods include Kombucha, Keifer and Sauerkraut.
  3. Fermented Col Liver Oil – a great source of an essential fat. Taken as capsules or as a topical cream. Green Pasture Blue Ice Royal Cod Liver Oil is a brand that can be bought on Amazon.com.
  4. Omega 3 Foods – Increase with avocadoes, fresh and wild-caught salmon or tuna, eggs, organic raw nuts, and chia or flax seeds.
  5. Gentian Tincture – 10 drops before each meal helps the digestive system eliminate toxins that can irritate the skin.
  6. Vitamin E Oil – especially natural D-alpha tocopherol with mixed natural tocopherols. Break open the capsules for the oils and avoid synthetic Vitamin E by reading the label and avoid Vitamin E “Acetate”.
  7. Aloe Vera Gel – especially when mixed with vitamin E oil, is a useful symptom remedy. Gels from freshly cut aloe vera leaves are optimum.
  8. Epsom Salt or Magnesium Flake Baths – If water is tolerable (for infants – you can pre-boil the water, let it cool and then use it as bath water), Add 1-2 cups of Epsom Salts or Magnesium Flakes, ½ cup of Sea Salt and the optional ½ teaspoon of vanilla extract and 10 drops of an essential oil like lavender or mint.
  9. Organic cold pressed virgin coconut oil can be used as a topical treatment. A thin layer of coconut oil or coconut oil lotion bar helps cool eczema itching and pain.
  10. Cucumbers – Cut thin slices of a whole organic cucumber and allow the slices to soak for at least two hours. Then filter the liquid, discard the cucumber and apply the liquid with a cotton pad.
  11. Carrots – Skin three organic carrots and boil them till they’re soft. Mash until you get a smooth paste, and then apply to affected areas for 15 minutes. Rinse with cool water when finished.
  12. Homemade Sea Spray has Vitamin D, magnesium and minerals that help the skin heal. Ingredients are:

– 1 cup of distilled water (or pre-boiled)                    – 1 tablespoon of sea salt

– 1 pinch of Epsom salt or magnesium flakes- Little Lavender or Mint essential oil (for scent)

Add the salt and Epsom salt (or magnesium flakes) to warm water and stir until the salt is dissolved. Add the essential oils and store in a jar or spray bottle. Apply with a cotton pad as a toner.

Scoliosis and Chiropractic

243513135213543525

Scoliosis is curvature of the spine that occurs most often during the growth spurt just before puberty.  While scoliosis can be caused by conditions such as cerebral palsy and muscular dystrophy, the cause of most scoliosis is determined as unknown.

Most cases of scoliosis are mild, but some children develop spine deformities that continue to get more severe as they grow.  Severe scoliosis can be disabling and cause organ dysfunction.

When a child often complains of a backache, it is wise to see a corrective care Doctor of Chiropractic who would perform a set of X-rays to determine if a vertebra is out of alignment (subluxation) and the child’s pliable spine has adapted to the situation, which may cause a degree of scolosis.  The old adage, “As a tree is bent, so shall it grow” can certainly be applied to the spine. Spinal misalignments in a young spine can develop curvatures which create spinal problems in adult life. A curvature is an abnormal spinal contour and can lead to several health problems.

The process of scoliosis development goes as follows: First, the spine does not develop its normal front to back arches, and this causes unusual weight to be carried on the spinal discs. Second, the center of certain discs shifts to one side, and the vertebra tip to the other side, just like a teeter totter. This misalignment, called a subluxation, causes the spine to tip to one side. To compensate for this bend, the spine then tips to the other side at another level and the result is scoliosis. Chiropractic care has often proven to be the most effective means of curvature control and correction.

Dr. Fred H. Barge, in his book “Scoliosis” states, “From the time children are very young, the swingy swing, play pens and walkers, are encouraging children to walk too soon. Exercises in school such as sit-ups, and bending over touching the toes are destructive to the proper development of normal spinal contours. The enforced sitting in school all day also contributes to improper development of normal spinal curves. All of these things can lead to the development of curvatures and scoliosis.”

If the problem is detected early in a young child, it can often be straightened. Regular chiropractic examination, especially after a severe fall or sports activity, can detect spinal subluxations. Chiropractic spinal adjustment can correct these misalignments and return the spine to its proper position.”

There certainly can be other causes of curvature. Hereditary development, a short leg, pelvic (hip) distortions, certain diseases, all can contribute to curvature development; but early detection and chiropractic care may prevent further curvature. Surgery and bracing are rarely sometimes necessary, but control and reduction through chiropractic care should be a primary consideration in all cases of scoliosis.

The Incredible Benefits of Coconut Oil

4545245354245545

If you created a list of the top super-foods that provide incredible nutrition, health, body-care and medicinal benefits, coconut oil would be in the top ten. Millions of people from around the world have always used it for these properties for thousands of years. Used as traditional medicine in Asia and in the Pacific, it has been considered the cure for all illnesses as it is called the ‘Tree of Life.’ Here in the west, we had false reports that the saturated fats in coconut oil and butter were bad for us by causing a myriad of health problems. In fact, when the research was conducted, we found the opposite to be true.

Coconut oil is a medium chain fatty acid which means that it is easier to permeate through our cell membranes, making it easier for cellular metabolism, digestion and it can go directly into the liver as an immediate and abundant energy source. You can take coconut oil one tablespoon 1-2 times a day with meals, salads, sauces or cooking meals.

Coconut oil offers an incredible cooking solution because it can be heated to high temperatures without it turning rancid as vegetable oil does. When looking for a high quality bottle, look for all natural, organic, unrefined, unbleached and unprocessed brands. Keep at warm room temperatures as storing it in a cold place will cause it to solidify and clumping.

Coconut oil is a powerful anti-microbial as it helps kill bacteria causing urinary tract infections (UTI’s), gonorrhea, measles, gum disease, staphylococcus, etc.). It is a anti-viral that can be used to fend off the flu, influenza, typhoid, HIV and other viral infectious diseases. It is a anti-protozoan as it battles tapeworm, giardia and others.

Coconut oil can be used to help battle obesity. It helps stabilize blood sugar and insulin production. The healthy fat, coconut oil is allows it be used by the body to create more energy and increased metabolism allowing for an ideal setting for weight loss. Coconut oil or coconut water can be a great alternative to the sugar-filled sports drinks because it helps with hydration, energy and endurance due to its high content of natural electrolytes.

It can be used as a natural topical treatment as a moisturizing lotion that helps soften dry skin and provide a healthy skin barrier. It has been found to reduce bags, puffiness and wrinkles around the eyes. It helps firm skin as in the case of preventing age spots, sagging and wrinkles. It also preps the skin prior to shaving, removes make-up, eliminates head lice and can prevent nosebleeds by applying a thin coat inside the nostrils. It can be used to condition hair, prevent split ends, reduce frizz and help to control dandruff. It can be used to soothe sunburns as it promotes healing of burns and blisters. For new moms, it helps remove scars, stretch marks, diaper rash and eases cracked and sore nipples from nursing. Mixed with baking soda, coconut oil can be used as a toothpaste. Other random uses for coconut oil:

– Eases acid reflux, Gallbladder disease and Pancreatitis
– Improves proper bowel movements
– Lowers hemorrhoid incidents and topical application can relieve hemorrhoid pain and swelling.
– Relieves and healths ulcers, IBS, colitis and Crohn’s disease
– Relieves diabetic neuropathies
– Protects against osteoporosis with improved calcium and magnesium absorption
– Reduces inflammation while supporting the repair of cellular tissues
– Regulates thyroid functioning and reduces incidence of epileptic seizures
– Protects against Colon, Breast and Digestive tract cancers.
– Protects against Alzheimers disease
– Strengthen Heart and Circulatory system and protecting against Heart disease and Arthrosclerosis
– Has antioxidants that fights off free radicals that are cancer causing.
– Stabilizes female hormones during menopause and reduces hot flashes
– Reduces the chance of men’s prostate enlargement

Skin Issues, Allergies and Immunity Helped with Chiropractic

312424354452341

Chiropractic and Medical research have shown that spinal misalignments (subluxations) can create visceral disease and immune dysfunction.  In 2004, one major medical study had a controlled group who had vertebral correction (Chiropractic adjustments) to reduce the vertebral misalignments in patients with atopic dermatitis and bronchial asthma.  The study also focused on the connections between visceral / immune dysfunction and the vertebral deformities (subluxations).

Among 120 atopic dermatitis patients who received spinal correction treatments each day, 106 (88%) showed improvement in skin itching and 86 (72%) showed improvement in skin condition.  Among 240 atopic dermatitis patients who did not receive spinal correction treatments each day, they could not obtain a sure treatment effect as well as the Chiropractic controlled group.

There was over a 70 percent improvement in allergic diseases as well. It was found that vertebral misalignment is a common and characteristic finding in patients with atopic dermatitis and bronchial asthma.

The study went on to say, “according to the results of this study the possibility may be considered that chronic nerve compression secondary to vertebral deformity in the thoracic region had a significant effect on the immune function of atopic dermatitis and bronchial asthma patients. The adrenal cortex functions of these allergy patients may be in the chronic decline condition with this chronic nerve compression” (1).

Understanding  the devastating effects of a Vertebral subluxation and the power of a Chiropractic adjustment, makes one study the laws of ‘adaptive physiology’.  When your body goes into a “Fight or Flight” response due to a stressor (when you are being chased by a mountain lion or hearing bad news) your body will respond by raising your blood pressure, heart rate, LDL cholesterol, insulin, and glucose.  this allows your body to adapt to your new environment stressors properly. Your cell-mediated immune system goes down which decreases your hormones that bind globulin resulting in a higher level of hormones in your blood that over time that can make you more susceptible to developing such illnesses as cancer, colds, influenza, and other infections.

Also, your body will decreases serotonin which down regulates learning and up regulates anxiety and fear centers in your brain so that your body can react properly to the stressor as well.  However, this may lead to increased anxiety, fear, depression, learning and attention deficit disorders.  This response is essentially adaptive physiology (2).  As great as this is when your being chased by a mountain lion, but this can be very harmful when this occurs all day, every day and you’re trying to live a healthy lifestyle.

During an adjustment, the movement of the spine creates a stimulation of proprioceptors in the muscles, tendons, ligaments, and discs.  This proprioception and mechanoreception are essential nutrients for balance and health of the brain and body.  With a vertebral subluxation, proprioception is diminished which is recognized by the body as a stressor.  This elicits the stress response, putting the body into adaptive physiology (3).  If it is not removed, the stressor stays there chronically and may cause the cascade of negative health conditions.

When you analyze the 95% of chronic illness, they are all the result of chronic adaptive physiology due to a stressor: cancer, diabetes, chronic pain, obesity, heart disease, fatigue, depression, infertility, decreased libido, insomnia, acid reflux, constipation, auto-immune issues, Alzheimer’s, dementia, etc.

“The 2004 Journal of Orthopedic Surgery” did a study and proved the relationship between vertebral deformities and allergic diseases (4).  They concluded that chronic nerve compression secondary to vertebral deformity in the thoracic region had a significant effect on the immune function of atopic dermatitis and bronchial asthma patients. The adrenal cortex functions of these allergy patients may be in the chronic decline condition with this chronic nerve compression. A sure treatment effect cannot be obtained without considering the nature and the function of the autonomous nerves.

So, in conclusion, if you yourself or if you know of someone suffering with any skin issues, asthma or immune system deficiencies (they get sick more often and easier than others), recommend them to visit our clinic for a Chiropractic evaluation. Chiropractors are the only types of healthcare professionals and doctors that directly treat nerve-impinging subluxations with specific Chiropractic adjustments.

The Benefits of Raw Honey

Honey

Honey has been used for centuries, not only for its sweetness but for its many healing properties. Raw honey contains natural antioxidants, flavonoids, enzymes, minerals (iron, zinc, potassium, calcium, magnesium, etc.) and vitamins (B6, thiamin, riboflavin, pantothenic acid and niacin). One tablespoon of raw honey has about 64 calories, but it has a healthy glycemic index – about less than consuming one banana. When consuming honey as a sweetener, it does not cause an elevation of insulin as white sugar does. Yet, Americans typically consume 1 lb. of honey in comparison to the unhealthy 150+lbs. of refined sugar and 62 lbs. of high fructose corn syrup.

As with most items today that are mass produced for profits and a long shelf-life, we have to be careful when choosing our bottled honey. Commercial honey is often heavily processed, chemically refined and pasteurized (this excessive heat destroys the natural enzymes, vitamins, and minerals in honey). Filtering and processing eliminates many of the beneficial phytonutrients including pollen and enzyme-rich propolis. The best way to achieve sparkling clear honey is by heat, so avoid the golden syrup-like honey in favor of opaque organic raw honey.

Research at the Texas A&M University’s Palynology Research Laboratory tested 60 honey products from supermarkets and found that 76% contained no trace of pollen (helps treat seasonal allergies). ‘Raw’ honey has not been heated, pasteurized or processed in any way that could rob it of any of the vital and beneficial nutrients and vitamins. In fact, pasteurized honey is just as unhealthy as eating refined sugar.

Raw honey has anti-viral, anti-bacterial, and anti-fungal properties. It promotes digestive health as it promotes good bacteria in the intestines. It is a powerful antioxidant, strengthens the immune system, blocks free radicals, reduces levels of homocysteine (aid in heart health) and helps with seasonal allergies.  It is best to purchase local-grown honey as the pollen will contain elements that will help your body during allergy season.

Raw honey has been found to stabilize blood pressure, balance blood-sugar levels, relieve pain and ulcers. Raw honey is an expectorant and anti-inflammatory that has been effective in treating respiratory conditions such like bronchitis and asthma.

Raw honey’s antibiotic properties are effective in treating colds and sore throats. Raw honey coats the throat and reduces irritation.  I will mix the raw honey with a small amount of cayenne pepper and one clove of minced garlic that will adhere to the throat’s lining and help fight off the infection.

For blocked sinuses, mix a teaspoon of honey in a pot of hot water, place a towel over your head and just inhale the steam for sinus relief. To treat allergies, take a teaspoon of raw honey a couple of times a day starting a few months prior to the allergy season.

Raw honey is also used as a remedy for skin wounds and infections by being applied topically. Honey-infused bandages are shown to aid in healing. Peter Charles Molan at the University of Waikato, New Zealand found that honey reacts with the body’s fluids to make hydrogen peroxide, creating an inhospitable environment for bacteria.

Treatments also include skin burns, rashes, and abrasions. Raw honey when applied overnight is also an effective treatment for acne and blemishes with rapid results. In fact, if you wash your face with raw honey, you may just see it leave you with sparkling, clean and soft skin.

The Journal of the Royal Society of Medicine sums up the benefits of raw honey, when stating: “The therapeutic potential benefits of pure, raw honey is grossly underutilized”. Research studies also show that replacing sugar with honey resulted in less weight gain and lower blood sugar levels. Raw honey can also help you start the day with more energy or aid in as a pre-workout food as it provides a supply of energy.

Varieties of Raw Honey
There are many varieties of honey, some of which are used to treat specific health conditions:
Manuka – Strong anti-bacterial properties. Helps colds, sore throats, indigestion, stomach ulcers, and acne.
Acacia – Liver cleanse, promotes intestinal health and reduces inflammation in the respiratory tract.
Buckwheat or Red Gum – Strong Antioxidant properties.
Eucalyptus – Prevent colds and headaches.
Linden – Sedative and antiseptic properties. Helps anxiety, insomnia, colds, coughs, and bronchitis.
Neem – Helps high blood pressure, diabetes, skin conditions, periodontal infections, throat infections and allergies.
