Carpal Tunnel Syndrome & Chiropractic

With the explosion of technology over the last 30 years (smartphones, tablets, laptops and personal computers), it is no wonder that we are seeing a rise with Carpel Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) cases.  CTS is also called “Repetitive Trauma Disorder” or “Overuse Syndrome”.  It occurs when the median nerve of the wrist is irritated or compressed, many times by the subluxation of the carpal bones.

The wrist is formed by 8 carpel bones with some creating a tunnel like structure (the carpal tunnel).  Through this tunnel, the median nerve and 9 tendons pass through.  Symptoms of CTS include pain, numbness and/or tingling, and weakness of the wrist, hand, and fingers.  Sometimes it is so severe that it will awaken the sufferer during the night.  CTS can affect anybody that does repetitive tasks with their hands i.e.:  secretaries, carpenters, computer workers, musicians, assembly line workers or anyone who uses the previously said technologies on a consistent basis.

The medical approach for CTS has included drugs, cortisone, splints, and surgery, yet all have shown a poor success rate.  As a result of the poor medical outcomes, Robert Mendelsohn, M.D. concluded:  “Since the medical treatment for this condition is so often unsatisfactory, I have for years been recommending that my patients consult muscle and joint therapy specialists (like Chiropractors).”

A number of researchers who found spinal nerve root irritation in patients which had carpel tunnel or ulnar-neuropathy have documented the relationship between spinal health and carpel tunnel syndrome.  Other researchers have shown that nerve compression in the neck can block the flow of nutrition to the nerves in the wrist.  This will increase the chance of injury.  Yet another researcher found that out of 1,000 cases of CTS a large number of these sufferers had bad neck arthritis, thus supporting the connection that in many cases – the issues of the sufferer does not stem from the wrist, but from the neck.  We have see hundreds of these cases in our clinic over the years.  A patient will come in with CTS symptoms and with Chiropractic adjustments of the Cervical Spine, the patient’s symptoms reduce or are eliminated.  Our success rate of CTS has been so high, I often wonder how this may be the case for the poor medical outcomes – as they treat the symptoms of CTS (wrist) and we find the cause (cervical spine subluxation correction).

The treatment by a Doctor of Chiropractic is to perform a gentle and specific Adjustment to gently realign the cervical spine or one of the subluxated eight bones (the scaphoid specifically is the most common subluxated carpal bone)of the wrist to reduce the never interference, irritation and swelling.  When the swelling decreases, so do the carpal tunnel symptoms.  With proper care, the bones and nerves to the wrist and the neck will function properly for many years to come.  Chiropractic treatment for this ailment is often a first choice because it is non-invasive, gentle, drug free, and surgery free.  The aim of the treatment is to move the joints into position so they can work as they were designed to and allow your nerves to function with no interference.  Once the joints are properly aligned, the stress in the area is lessened and the pain and numbness are relieved.

In light of what is known about CTS, anyone suffering from it should see a chiropractor to ensure that their spine is free of spinal subluxations.  A chiropractic spinal adjustment may make the difference between a pain free wrist and spinal surgery.

Support School Spinal Scoliosis Screenings?

Since the 1970s, school nurses have performed annual health screenings of school-age children looking for scoliosis due to some families in our country who unfortunately had a poor access to health care.  As a result, state boards of education made it a mandate that school nurses screen for scoliosis each year.

Unfortunately, these spinal exams are not performed by spinal specialists like Doctors of Chiropractic who spend many years studying the anatomy, physiology and pathologies of spinal related disorders.  If this was the case, I believe more children would be recommended for necessary Chiropractic care in the attempt to alleviate spinal disorders including scoliosis.

Not all cases of scoliosis can be fixed with Chiropractic care.  Some cases exist where the scoliosis was brought on by congenital issues (malformation of a vertebrae) or an extreme example of an abnormal curvature of the spine.  Recent research indicates that pathological tension on the spinal cord causes a rotatory movement of the spine to release pressure off the central nervous system may be a cause of this, but more studies are necessary.  Some of these cases calls for medical intervention (based on the amount of spinal angle degrees) like bracing or worst case scenario involves surgery like the placement of a titanium steel rod to help prevent the curve from getting any worse.  Why are the medical surgeons worried?

Too much of a spinal scoliosis can choke off nerve communication from the brain and the body’s cells, tissues and organs.  They are worried that the extreme scoliosis can lead to organ failure.  The good news is that this type of scoliosis is rare.  In my opinion most people develop a mild level of structural scoliosis due to living life – playing sports, injuries, repetitive poor posture positions and other activities can strain the body to a point where muscle imbalance arises, inflammation flares and the spine adapts to a new positional state.

That is why as Chiropractors, we work on realigning the spinal vertebrae with the use of X-Rays measurements, palpation and specific vector-planned Chiropractic adjustments.  In my years, I have helped several scoliosis patient’s improve their spinal angles.  I always mention how if you have a physical problem, like a vertebrae out of alignment due to life’s stressors – no chemical, potion or lotion will move that bone and you need a physical solution like a Chiropractic Adjustment to fix this situation.

If you want to perform some basic scoliosis exams at home, I recommend visiting this webpage for further details.

I do recommend that if you do suffer with a scoliosis, seeking the opinion of well qualified health care physician is important to rule out the worst case scenario.  If Chiropractic becomes part of your treatment plan for pain relief and attempting to correct the scoliosis (even a mild improvement helps ease pressure off the nerves and allows for better body functioning), then seek our a well qualified Chiropractor with years of experience and one who will take X-Rays to make the necessary measurements.

I do not profess to be a Scoliosis Expert, but I have taken advanced continual educational classes in Scoliosis treatments that showed me newer ways to treat such conditions (based on the teachings of the CLEAR Institute).  Call us if you live in the northern Atlanta areas (offices in Roswell and Johns Creek, GA).  Otherwise, if you do have a moderate to severe Scoliosis I would recommend to contact the CLEAR Institute.

Who Should See a Doctor of Chiropractic?

Chiropractic Adjustment Dr. Matthew Eisen

Chiropractic is the only profession that concerns itself with the detection and correction of spinal subluxations.  A Subluxation is when a spinal bone (vertebrae) is misaligned and places pressure on a nerve that inhibits the life signals from the brain to each and every cell and organ of the body.  Subluxations may result from mental, physical or chemical stresses.

When functioning correctly, your body is constantly and appropriately adapting to stress which can arise out of things like your job, sports activity, breathing in pollution, the genes you’ve inherited, poor posture, or any one of the many parts that make up your day to day life.

The extent to which stress is an integral part of all our lives, for better and worse is amazing.  However, as you are probably aware, there are limits to what we can cope with.  When you cross that line, the body’s adaptive processes start to break down and spinal subluxations may occur or, if already present, add to stress and detract from your adaptive capacity.

Whether you are a mother, or a newborn baby, a small child who is about to enter a new growth spurt, a student preparing for exams, or an accountant who has just survived another tax year, your spine is susceptible to spinal subluxations.  That being the case we should all see a chiropractor to screen for and reduce spinal subluxations.  It is likely that the sooner a subluxation is detected, the faster, the more completely it will be corrected, ensuring the proper development, function and adaptation of the body.  It is especially important for children to be checked regularly because they are still developing.  If negative patterns are laid down during growth, their potential throughout life may be severely compromised.

As you have learned, chiropractic is not only a method of care to ensure the health of your spine, but is also a way of life.  The chiropractic lifestyle encompasses many factors for those who are interested in being their best and reaching their optimum.  It is a philosophy of health which respects and works with the natural laws.  It attempts to allow you to journey through life in a state of well-being, far removed from that requiring the use of drugs and surgery.

A recent survey of over 2800 long-term chiropractic patients discovered something fascinating.  People who received regular chiropractic care reported ongoing improvement in health, well-being and quality of life.  Those patients were not receiving care because they were sick, but because they wanted to be their best.  The longer they received chiropractic care the higher their level of health.  These results open the door to the question, “what limits are there to optimizing our physical and mental well being when the effects of spinal subluxations are minimized?”

If we look at health as a journey, and not a destination, there is always something we can be doing or improving in ourselves along the way.  Chiropractic is ideal for those who choose to embark on this life journey towards being their best.

Be Careful of Chiropractors Who Refuse X-Rays

Copyrighted image to Enhanced Wellness. No authorized duplication of this image is permitted.

I have to share this story with you because it scares me as a Doctor of Chiropractic and as a family-man.

There is a certain Chiropractic franchise that is (no pun intended) popping up everywhere that never take x-rays.  Probably to keep their running costs down as X-Ray machines are very expensive.

Know that Chiropractors have used x-rays of the spine since the early 1900’s to diagnose and treat patients.  Over my 12 years in practice, I have found x-rays to be an essential part of the Chiropractic experience – from the initial examination of the patient, diagnosis and subsequent treatment.  So much, that we invested in a Digital X-Ray unit back in 2008, before many hospitals carried digital x-rays.  Caring for several thousands of people over the years, the x-rays have helped me shape my treatment plan as well as serve as a life-saving device.

In my third year of private practice, I had a gentleman walk in with back pain.  After his exam, I found it medical necessity to take a series of x-rays of his back, the area of his complaints.  Low and behold I found a life-threatening condition in his thoracic x-ray.  He had a Aortic Aneurysm that was the size of a large softball.  This is a condition where a bulge appears in the Aorta (the body’s main artery that carries oxygen-rich blood from the heart to the rest of the body).  As time goes on, it fills with blood and expands like a balloon until the aorta bursts causing internal bleeding and sudden death.

I immediately called 911 and had an ambulance take this man directly to the ER for life-saving surgery.  This man was a walking time-bomb, and it was his x-ray that allowed me to help save his life.

Now, if this gentleman walked into this ‘particular’ franchise where x-rays are not part of their examination protocol, they probably would have proceeded straight to a Chiropractic adjustment and with a high velocity thoracic impulse, they could have caused the aorta to rupture right there in their office.

Fast forward to my office just two weeks ago where a patient of mine from many years ago returned to restart her care.  She explained that for the past several years she was seeing another Chiropractor who was closer to her home, but now she was scared to return to that office.

I asked why and she replied that her son walked in to this very clinic (located not to far from our office) and he presented with severe neck pain.  This Doctor and clinic did not adequately perform an initial exam, NEVER took x-rays and rushed to perform a Chiropractic treatment.  Please note, that Chiropractic adjustments are completely safe – millions are given each day in this country with great results.  In fact, in comparison to allopathic medicine, death and injuries from Chiropractic care is ridiculously small compared to the death toll each year by medical errors and prescription medications.  Hence Chiropractors low malpractice insurance premium payments.

But in this instance it was the perfect storm…the Chiropractor was relatively new in practice, no x-rays taken and the DC performed a maneuver – a whiplash-like rotatory motion of the neck that I consider dangerous in certain people (we do not perform this type of treatment at our clinic).  Because this patient had a previous injury to his neck (should have been explored during the initial exam and x-rays), the patient reacted very badly to the treatment and suffered a stroke.  He has been in the hospital’s ICU for several weeks now.  Also note that his mother never lost the nerve (no pun intended again) to see a Chiropractor again, hence she was at our office for a Chiropractic Adjustment.

What can we learn from this?  As a patient you have the power to choose the Chiropractor – one who cares enough to listen to you, perform an adequate history, exam and especially take X-rays.  If you see a Chiropractor who never took your x-rays, I caution you and recommend you seek out a Chiropractor who cares for you so much they will take X-Rays.  Without x-rays you are walking in the dark of care and you are putting your life in their hands.  Your Chiropractor should care for you and your family as if they were his / her own.  These are the principles we stand for at our clinic.

Asthma and Chiropractic Care

Asthma has become a large health concern for children in recent years. Over the past 20 years the incidence of asthma has doubled. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimated that in 1998, approximately 17,299,000 people in the United States, or 6.4% of the population, with cases among very young children up 160%. As reported in the June 16, 1999 issue of JAMA (Journal of the American Medical Association), the CDC also noted that between 1980 and 1994, the number of people self-reporting asthma grew 75%.

In a study conducted in 1996 by the Michigan Chiropractic Council (MCC), a panel of doctors performed an out-come assessment study to test the qualitative and quantitative effectiveness of chiropractic care on children with asthma. The high demand of parents seeking alternative care for pediatric asthma was shown by the overwhelming interest in the study. More than 500 parents called the MCC seeking to get their child involved in the chiropractic study.

The study, which took place during May and June of 1996, examined the chiropractic effectiveness in correcting the cause of asthma in patients from birth to age 17. The average age of the participant was 10 years. “After 30 days of chiropractic health care, patients averaged only one attack, whereas prior to the study they were experiencing more than four attacks,” said MCC Dr. Bob Graham, who directed the study. “Medications, which can be costly, were decreased by nearly 70 percent. Finally, patient satisfaction was rated 8.5 on a scale of 10.” More than 70 chiropractors from 62 cities in Michigan studied more than 80 children suffering from asthma.

The International Chiropractic Pediatric Association lists several studies on their web site (www.4icpa.org) discussing the benefits of chiropractic for children with asthma. The following are some of those excerpts:

“76.5% of patients with bronchial asthma said they benefited from chiropractic treatment. Peak flow rate and vital capacity increased after the third treatment. Significantly lower quality of life impairment rating scores were reported for 90.1% of children after 60 days of chiropractic care. During this same time period the average number of asthma attacks decreased an average of 44.9%, and asthma medication usage was decreased an average of 66.5%. Among parents of asthmatic children who had received chiropractic treatment, 92% considered this treatment beneficial.”

Asthma Study Shows Chiropractic Benefit

From the November / December 2000 issue of Today’s Chiropractic, comes a study report on Asthma. In the study, 47 patients were observed for a two year period. These patients had all been medically diagnosed with persistent asthma ranging from mild persistent in 11 cases, moderate persistent in 28 cases, to severe persistent in 8 cases. The care rendered consisted of specific chiropractic adjustments. The range of visits was from 14 to 44, with the average being 26 during the study period. Most patients in the study began care at a rate of 3 visits per week with this frequency being reduced after 4 to 8 initial weeks. The patient results were very good with all 47 of the study patients showing a marked improvement ranging from 87 to 100 percent.

Patient observed improvement was measured by both improvement in their symptoms as well as a decrease in their usage of acute asthma attack medication. Even more impressive was that all of the patients in the study reported maintaining their improvement after a two-year follow up.

Do you know someone who is suffering needlessly with Asthma? Have them come to our clinic to see if we can help make a difference in their life and health.

Skin Issues, Allergies and Immunity Helped with Chiropractic

312424354452341

Chiropractic and Medical research have shown that spinal misalignments (subluxations) can create visceral disease and immune dysfunction.  In 2004, one major medical study had a controlled group who had vertebral correction (Chiropractic adjustments) to reduce the vertebral misalignments in patients with atopic dermatitis and bronchial asthma.  The study also focused on the connections between visceral / immune dysfunction and the vertebral deformities (subluxations).

Among 120 atopic dermatitis patients who received spinal correction treatments each day, 106 (88%) showed improvement in skin itching and 86 (72%) showed improvement in skin condition.  Among 240 atopic dermatitis patients who did not receive spinal correction treatments each day, they could not obtain a sure treatment effect as well as the Chiropractic controlled group.

There was over a 70 percent improvement in allergic diseases as well. It was found that vertebral misalignment is a common and characteristic finding in patients with atopic dermatitis and bronchial asthma.

The study went on to say, “according to the results of this study the possibility may be considered that chronic nerve compression secondary to vertebral deformity in the thoracic region had a significant effect on the immune function of atopic dermatitis and bronchial asthma patients. The adrenal cortex functions of these allergy patients may be in the chronic decline condition with this chronic nerve compression” (1).

Understanding  the devastating effects of a Vertebral subluxation and the power of a Chiropractic adjustment, makes one study the laws of ‘adaptive physiology’.  When your body goes into a “Fight or Flight” response due to a stressor (when you are being chased by a mountain lion or hearing bad news) your body will respond by raising your blood pressure, heart rate, LDL cholesterol, insulin, and glucose.  this allows your body to adapt to your new environment stressors properly. Your cell-mediated immune system goes down which decreases your hormones that bind globulin resulting in a higher level of hormones in your blood that over time that can make you more susceptible to developing such illnesses as cancer, colds, influenza, and other infections.

Also, your body will decreases serotonin which down regulates learning and up regulates anxiety and fear centers in your brain so that your body can react properly to the stressor as well.  However, this may lead to increased anxiety, fear, depression, learning and attention deficit disorders.  This response is essentially adaptive physiology (2).  As great as this is when your being chased by a mountain lion, but this can be very harmful when this occurs all day, every day and you’re trying to live a healthy lifestyle.

During an adjustment, the movement of the spine creates a stimulation of proprioceptors in the muscles, tendons, ligaments, and discs.  This proprioception and mechanoreception are essential nutrients for balance and health of the brain and body.  With a vertebral subluxation, proprioception is diminished which is recognized by the body as a stressor.  This elicits the stress response, putting the body into adaptive physiology (3).  If it is not removed, the stressor stays there chronically and may cause the cascade of negative health conditions.

When you analyze the 95% of chronic illness, they are all the result of chronic adaptive physiology due to a stressor: cancer, diabetes, chronic pain, obesity, heart disease, fatigue, depression, infertility, decreased libido, insomnia, acid reflux, constipation, auto-immune issues, Alzheimer’s, dementia, etc.

“The 2004 Journal of Orthopedic Surgery” did a study and proved the relationship between vertebral deformities and allergic diseases (4).  They concluded that chronic nerve compression secondary to vertebral deformity in the thoracic region had a significant effect on the immune function of atopic dermatitis and bronchial asthma patients. The adrenal cortex functions of these allergy patients may be in the chronic decline condition with this chronic nerve compression. A sure treatment effect cannot be obtained without considering the nature and the function of the autonomous nerves.

So, in conclusion, if you yourself or if you know of someone suffering with any skin issues, asthma or immune system deficiencies (they get sick more often and easier than others), recommend them to visit our clinic for a Chiropractic evaluation. Chiropractors are the only types of healthcare professionals and doctors that directly treat nerve-impinging subluxations with specific Chiropractic adjustments.

The Walking Dead

23534523434125

So you may have heard about this TV show that has been a huge cultural phenomenon – breaking TV ratings each week for the past five years and helping the current zombie-craze reach new heights. Just last week in Marietta, they had their annual Zombie Day Parade where people dress up like zombies and parade around the town square – to the delight or fear of many.

The TV show depicts a group of survivors of the zombie-apocalypse and their weekly tales of survival – fending off the walking dead and other survivors who fight for limited resources (food, weapons and shelter). The premise is simple, the graphics are gruesome and the character development is enticing.

What I think is so amazing about this show, is how I can interpret a metaphor for Chiropractic care and health in this synopsis. I know, I know … I see everything through my chiropractic eyes – I will admit to that, but when you’re the underdog in the healthcare system (in comparison to the traditional allopathic approach) and you hold the answer to almost every health condition that presents itself, I am always looking at ways to communicate this message we have.

The walking dead are people that still function – they walk, make noises and feed. Yet they are not fully alive like the survivors who can still reason, have emotions and learn to adapt to their grim circumstance.

Similar, people who are Subluxated are walking around on a similar zombie-like basic level – they can have pain, immobility and their bodies are simply not functioning on an optimal level as it should. When you receive your Chiropractic adjustment, it allows your body to function better, pain relief and allow better communication between the brain and all parts of the body that allows more harmonious or balanced hormones, immunity and even the activation of proper genetic codes. In simpler terms, you are at a higher stage of life and functioning when compared to the average person who does not receive care.

Under regular chiropractic care, you stand out like a survivor compared the sea of zombies that take life as a victim or genetic-mentality (ie: I can never escape these headaches or It is in my family history and as a result I too will develop heart disease). They do not know there can be a solution by living a holistic and healthy lifestyle of our 5 essentials: Positive Mindset, Chiropractic Care, Proper Nutrition, Fitness & Oxygen, and limiting toxins.

A sad scenario for those who must walk the earth without ever realizing their body’s full potential for health, wellness and vitality! How much more they could become…a better athlete, employee, student, spouse, parent, etc.

So unlike the show, where there is no cure when you become a zombie, you have the opportunity to turn a new leaf for health and well-being each and every day when you awake. Will you make those healthy 5 Essential choices or not? If yes, great – let’s get started…if not, you can become part of the walking dead … as always, it’s your choice!

Oh, and reach out to your friends and family who may unknowingly become a ill-health zombie and refer them to our office! You may just save a life.

Your Best Defense Towards the Ebola Virus

325354345434542345435

For the past several weeks many patients have asked me about my thoughts on the Ebola issue. Of course, living here in Atlanta, where Emory has treated infected patients in a “Ebola-equipped” hospital room – some fear has overcome our community. Ebola is an infectious and generally fatal disease marked by fever and severe internal bleeding, spread through contact with infected body fluids by a filovirus (Ebola virus), whose normal host species is unknown. It is only contagious when the infected individual is showing active symptoms and again, through direct contact with infected body fluids.

Patients with Ebola have been treated by medical supervision – observations of vitals, hydration levels and blood work allows the patient’s immune systems to fight off the virus. So in essence, the only way to defeat the Ebola virus comes down to your immune system. So what are ways that you can take precautionary steps to decrease the rare chance you will come in to contact with someone who has the virus? The answer is to take steps to boost your own immune system. Something we know very well at our office. The breakdown:

1. Positive Mindset:
Having a positive mindset as been shown to help boost the immune systems of individuals fighting various bacterial and viral infections. How? Well when under stress, your body will release “stress hormones” that deter healing and set your body in a ‘flight or fight’ response. Conversely, keeping stress down helps to actively keep your immune system functioning at a higher capacity.

2. Maintaining Your Chiropractic Adjustments:
Many studies have shown that immediately following your corrective Chiropractic adjustment – your immune system jumps into high gear to fight off any pathogens. Keeping up at least a weekly adjustment can help maintain a properly functioning immune system.

3. Eating Healthy Meals:
a. Keeping up nutritious meals like consuming plenty of organic Vegetables, fruits, lean animal proteins, nuts and seeds is a start.

b. Stay away or limit consumption of foods that will lower your immunity, like: sugar, dairy, alcohol, corn, wheat (gluten), hydrogenated foods, excessive animal protein, excessive flour intake and highly processed foods.

c. To also aid the digestive tract, you will want to add antibacterial foods that target the harmful bacteria in the gut, like: astragalus, elderberry, lemon balm, licorice root, olive leaf and oregano oil.

d. You will also want to add immune-boosting foods and herbs: siberian ginseng, milk thistle, dandelion root, artichoke, turmeric, guava, peppers, kale, oranges, cod liver oil, sauerkraut, coconut keifer, apple cider vinegar and kombucha

e. You will also want to add immune-boosting Vitamins and Probiotics: Vitamin C, Vitamin D, Omega 3, Probiotics (all available at the clinic).

4. Daily Exercise and Fitness:
Many studies show the effectiveness of fitness activity and boosting the immune system. I recommend low impact exercises like Pilates for building core strength, lean muscle and flexibility as well as our Burst trainings like our Max T3 workouts that set your metabolic rate.

5. Limiting Your Toxin Exposure:
Your immune suffers when you take in constant environmental toxins like household detergents, cleaners and sprays. Using natural concoctions like Vinegar and water to clean table surfaces is a start.

Learn more about any and all of these immune-boosting tools at our clinic via a consultation or at one of our many workshops.
