The Super Bowl of Health

Dr. Eisen and Team USA Wrestling Olympians

With the Super Bowl a few days away, what do you think the athletes are doing to maintain peak performance and health before the big game?  Getting Chiropractic care of course!  Chiropractors have been giving athletes the edge in sports for quite some time.  Chiropractors are quite commonly found to be “team doctors” for many professional, college, high school, and elementary school teams.  Many successful athletes have banked on chiropractic care to enhance performance and health i.e.:  Joe Montana, Jerry Rice, Aaron Rodgers, Ian Thorpe, Joe Naimith, Muhammed Ali, Arnold Swarznegger, Donovan Bailey, John McEnroe, Dan O’Brien, Ivan Lendle and countless others.

Many amateur and professional athletes wouldn’t dream of competing without first getting a chiropractor check-up. Research has even shown that on the average, chiropractic care increases athletic performance by 17%.  When an athlete knows and understands the difference it can make, they gladly have regular chiropractic care.

If athletic performance is increased by this amount due to an increase in nerve function, then doesn’t it make sense that regular life performance would increase by the same amount.  This means that people can simply perform better in their normal daily duties.

An increase in performance is why 75% of the San Francisco 49ers receives chiropractic care regularly.  It is also why over 20 chiropractors were present in the last Olympics and why chiropractors are consistently high athletic performers.

How about you?  Do you want a winning edge in sports or in life in general?  Sports injuries nearly always jar and misalign the spinal column: a blow to the ribs, legs, feet, head, shoulder or torso always radiates to the center of the body.  That’s why a chiropractic check-up is needed when you are injured, regardless of the nature of the injury.

If an injury is serious enough to need medical care, the spine is almost always damaged as well.   Medical doctors are simply not trained to locate and correct spinal subluxations.  That is the realm of the doctor of chiropractic.  If your sports team would like an edge and is in need of a “team doctor” give us a call we are interested in working with you.

To My Child (One More Day)

To My Child  (One More Day)  by Anonymous

Just for this morning, I am going to smile when I see your face and laugh when I feel like crying.
Just for this morning, I will let you choose what you want to wear, and smile and say how perfect it is.
Just for this morning, I am going to step over the laundry, and pick you up and take you to the park to play.
Just for this morning, I will leave the dishes in the sink, and let you teach me how to put that puzzle of yours together.

Just for this afternoon, I will unplug the telephone and keep the computer off, and sit with you in the backyard and blow bubbles..
Just for this afternoon, I will not yell once, not even a tiny grumble when you scream and whine for the ice cream truck, and I will buy you one if he comes by.
Just for this afternoon, I won’t worry about what you are going to be when you grow up, or second guess every decision I have made where you are concerned.
Just for this afternoon, I will let you help me bake cookies, and I won’t stand over you trying to fix them.
Just for this afternoon, I will take us to McDonald’s and buy us both a Happy Meal so you can have both toys..

Just for this evening, I will hold you in my arms and tell you a story about how you were born and how much I love you.
Just for this evening, I will let you splash in the tub and not get angry.
Just for this evening, I will let you stay up late while we sit on the porch and count all the stars.
Just for this evening, I will snuggle beside you for hours, and miss my favorite TV shows.
Just for this evening when I run my ! finger through your hair as you pray, I will simply be grateful that God has given me the greatest gift ever given..

I will think about the mothers and fathers who are searching for their missing children, the mothers and fathers who are visiting their children’s graves instead of their bedrooms, and mothers and fathers who are in hospital rooms watching their children suffer senselessly, and screaming inside that they can’t handle it anymore.

And when I kiss you good night I will hold you a little tighter, a little longer. It is then, that I will thank God for you, and ask him for nothing, except one more day…………..

Rest in Peace, Dr. Charles Majors.

Why Return to the Office if I am Feeling Good

photo14

Did you know that by the time you have disease symptoms, your body could have been in a state of dis-ease for weeks, months, or even years!

Some people think pain is the only reason to visit a chiropractor.  That attitude is dangerous because vertebral subluxations are often painless.  They may remain within you, interfering with your life and health expression for months or years before symptoms finally appear.  Pain or obvious symptoms can often be the last stage of disease.  For example would you go to a dentist who would wait until you were in pain before he checked you for cavities?  Would you go to an internist who told you to wait until you had a stroke before addressing high blood pressure?  Would you go to an oncologist who said the only time to deal with cancer was when the tumours started making you feel sick?  Of course not!

In the same way, the best time to correct vertebral subluxations is now!  Before pain or other symptoms develop.  Now you know why chiropractors call subluxations “the silent killer.”  You may have them without any spinal nerve or muscular pains or other symptoms. You may say to your chiropractor while he/she is checking your spine:  “Wow, what did you touch? I had no idea I had a problem there, I was feeling no pain.”

Should I Return?

Patients are often asked to return periodically for spinal checkups even if the presenting problems that brought them to their doctor of chiropractic have cleared up.  Why?  Your D.C. has good reasons for requesting you to return even if you feel “fine.”

Since vertebral subluxations are often painless, your body may have been fighting them for a long time by the time they are discovered.  The “battle scene” may be littered with lots of casualties such as weakened, unbalanced, and unevenly worn joints, muscles, ligaments, tendons and discs plus fibrosis or scar tissue.

This damage needs to be cleaned up and repaired if your spine is to heal properly.  Fibrosis causes a particular problem since this “scar like tissue” builds up within a few days of subluxation damage!  Further, the muscles begin to “learn” abnormal holding patterns that must be “unlearned” before you can hold your spinal adjustments.  Can you imagine what your joints would look like after a few years?

Since these tissues are involved in holding the vertebrae in proper alignment, this “scar like tissue” must dissolve if your spine is to heal properly.  Until the scar tissue dissolves and tissues rebuild, your body will not “hold” its adjustments well and regular spinal corrections or adjustments are needed.

Why wait until you have a health problem to see a chiropractor?  Why not practice preventive health maintenance and have your spinal column checked for vertebral subluxations before you get sick?

Make it a Happy & Healthy Thanksgiving

ewc_thanksgiving_2016

Thanksgiving is the holiday for giving thanks for what we have, spending time with friends and family.  But it’s also the holiday often associated with excessive amounts of food!  Everyone knows that a Thanksgiving meal is often laden with sugary and carb-loaded goodies and many overindulge and consume more in this one meal than they normally do in a whole day.  But have you ever noticed how you feel after this extravagant meal?  Most feel groggy and tired and maybe so full you feel sick.  Making a few healthy changes to your Thanksgiving routine could mean you’ll feel better, be healthier and more Thankful in the end!  Here are some great Holiday Tips:

Eat breakfast: Breakfast is often called the “most important meal of the day.”  This is especially true on Thanksgiving!  It may seem counterproductive to eat a hearty breakfast before a large Thanksgiving feast, but eating something in the morning can help you keep portions smaller at the big meal.  Breakfast will also keep you energized enough to get kitchen task done and entertain your guests. Try having some scrambled eggs, a small omelet with veggies, or fruit with keifer.  The protein will keep you full all morning and keep you from feeling ravenous once dinner is served.

Avoid Grazing: It’s easy to graze during a holiday feast like Thanksgiving. The problem with grazing is two-fold. Because you are aimlessly reaching for appetizers and cookies, you have no real measure of the amount of food you are eating, which does not help your waistline.  Avoid sugar filled drinks like soda and juices.  Opt for water instead.  Make a veggie platter to satisfy you and your guests as appetizers, over the more fattening options of chips and crackers.  Prepare an inviting salad to enjoy before, or with, dinner.  The crunchy veggies will help satiate your hunger won’t add inches to your waistline.  Substitute potatoes with sweet potatoes instead and serve fiber-rich broccoli for Thanksgiving dinner.

Get off the couch: No you don’t have to work off every morsel you eat!  But keeping in mind that the typical Thanksgiving meal weighs in at about 3,000 calories you may want to incorporate some physical activity to your day to avoid weight gain.  Even just a short 10 minute walk before and after the meal not only wards of winter pounds but boosts your energy and confidence levels!

No matter what you choose to do, remember to give thanks for all the blessings we have and have a happy and blessed Thanksgiving Day!

5 Minute Healthy Meal Ideas

Healthy choices are important. Sometimes it seems impossible to make them when it comes to nutritional health due to a lack of time. It takes an investment of time and finances to make healthier nutritional choices as well as self-discipline. However, the road to getting started may be a little easier with resources that help simplify the process.Vegetable

In an effort to help encourage you in making healthier choices, we wanted to share a Pinterest find that was recently shared with us on Facebook. It is a simple chart based off of a Women’s Health Magazine article titled, “What Nutritionists Eat When They Only Have 5 Minutes to Prep a Meal.

We don’t know about you, but for our staff at Enhanced Wellness, five minutes of meal prep sounds like a plan! We love the idea of a quick and simple meal made of a nutritional wrap, deli meat, and lettuce! Let us know if you’ve tried any of these easy five minute meals.

In addition to making healthy eating choices, it is also good to get in regular physical exercise. The Mayo Clinic recommends at least 30 minutes per day. With the spring here it is up to you to take advantage of the beautiful weather to get out and get moving. Don’t let any back pain or joint pain allow you the excuse to keep from getting exercise. Call our Roswell, GA clinic at (770) 552-7500 for an appointment to get you on the journey to healthy living!

Asthma and Chiropractic Care

Asthma has become a large health concern for children in recent years. Over the past 20 years the incidence of asthma has doubled. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimated that in 1998, approximately 17,299,000 people in the United States, or 6.4% of the population, with cases among very young children up 160%. As reported in the June 16, 1999 issue of JAMA (Journal of the American Medical Association), the CDC also noted that between 1980 and 1994, the number of people self-reporting asthma grew 75%.

In a study conducted in 1996 by the Michigan Chiropractic Council (MCC), a panel of doctors performed an out-come assessment study to test the qualitative and quantitative effectiveness of chiropractic care on children with asthma. The high demand of parents seeking alternative care for pediatric asthma was shown by the overwhelming interest in the study. More than 500 parents called the MCC seeking to get their child involved in the chiropractic study.

The study, which took place during May and June of 1996, examined the chiropractic effectiveness in correcting the cause of asthma in patients from birth to age 17. The average age of the participant was 10 years. “After 30 days of chiropractic health care, patients averaged only one attack, whereas prior to the study they were experiencing more than four attacks,” said MCC Dr. Bob Graham, who directed the study. “Medications, which can be costly, were decreased by nearly 70 percent. Finally, patient satisfaction was rated 8.5 on a scale of 10.” More than 70 chiropractors from 62 cities in Michigan studied more than 80 children suffering from asthma.

The International Chiropractic Pediatric Association lists several studies on their web site (www.4icpa.org) discussing the benefits of chiropractic for children with asthma. The following are some of those excerpts:

“76.5% of patients with bronchial asthma said they benefited from chiropractic treatment. Peak flow rate and vital capacity increased after the third treatment. Significantly lower quality of life impairment rating scores were reported for 90.1% of children after 60 days of chiropractic care. During this same time period the average number of asthma attacks decreased an average of 44.9%, and asthma medication usage was decreased an average of 66.5%. Among parents of asthmatic children who had received chiropractic treatment, 92% considered this treatment beneficial.”

Asthma Study Shows Chiropractic Benefit

From the November / December 2000 issue of Today’s Chiropractic, comes a study report on Asthma. In the study, 47 patients were observed for a two year period. These patients had all been medically diagnosed with persistent asthma ranging from mild persistent in 11 cases, moderate persistent in 28 cases, to severe persistent in 8 cases. The care rendered consisted of specific chiropractic adjustments. The range of visits was from 14 to 44, with the average being 26 during the study period. Most patients in the study began care at a rate of 3 visits per week with this frequency being reduced after 4 to 8 initial weeks. The patient results were very good with all 47 of the study patients showing a marked improvement ranging from 87 to 100 percent.

Patient observed improvement was measured by both improvement in their symptoms as well as a decrease in their usage of acute asthma attack medication. Even more impressive was that all of the patients in the study reported maintaining their improvement after a two-year follow up.

Do you know someone who is suffering needlessly with Asthma? Have them come to our clinic to see if we can help make a difference in their life and health.
