You Are What You Eat

 

There are four cornerstones to having health naturally:

 

  1. Proper nerve supply
  2. Regular exercise
  3. Sufficient rest and
  4. Proper nutrition.

 

This article is deals with the issue of: WHAT IS PROPER NUTRITION? AND DO WE GET IT?

 

In our society of fast food, prepared foods, processed foods, we are faced with a growing problem of under-nourishment.  Our food is continually being sold to us in more variety of ways that are increasingly deficient in nutrients i.e. vitamins, minerals, and food enzymes.

 

To have a diet that is 100% in quality and satisfies your body’s needs 100%, you have to have a diet that is 100% natural.  A diet needs to be all whole foods, foods that comes from what grows in the ground or from what walks upon the earth.  These foods must be 100% natural, no herbicides or pesticides, no foods that have been filled with repetitive doses of antibiotics or steroids.  If what you are eating has added salt, sugar, food colouring and fat, then you are eating foods that are deficient in vitamins and minerals.

 

NUTRITION IS SIMPLE!  If we eat only natural foods that have not been tampered with, we receive all the nutrients we were designed for.  Unfortunately, for the vast majority of Americans, that is far from the truth.  So many people eat and drink foods that have been altered, so that they no longer have the proper balance of nutrition.

 

No doubt, the decreased quality of our food has happened because of the marketing of more desirable foods that are supposedly quicker to prepare and have better taste.  We have entered a time in today’s world that has spiralled out of control.  We need to think seriously of our direction with nutrition if we want to decrease the health problems that have been created because of our failing nutrition.  The surgeon general in the United States has said that 80% of disease is caused by improper nutrition.  That should sound the alarm in every household.

 

Foods like pop tarts, doughnuts, many breakfast cereals, pizza pockets, most fried foods, and drinks like pop, sunny delight, have next to no nutrition value and are harmful to our health.

 

Whatever happened to people eating apples, bananas, oranges, carrots and broccoli?  Preparing foods that contain whole foods are easy and full of taste.  Preparing healthy lunches for our children will make a big difference in how they learn and play at school.  It will make a very large difference in their overall development.  Think about this, healthier lunches are less expensive to purchase than the unhealthy ones.

Inflammation – A Precursor to Cancer

Inflammation is a localized physical condition where part of the body becomes reddened, swollen, hot, and often painful, especially as a reaction to injury or infection.  This is a normal bodily response to stop the spread of injury or infection.  However, when triggers like toxicity causes an inflammatory response and there are no foreign bodies that the body recognizes to fight off, this is a condition known as a autoimmune disease (the body’s normally protective immune system causes damage to its own tissues).

In the study of of Cancer and other diseases (Leaky Gut, IBS, etc.) inflammation is pegged as one of the first symptoms or triggers.  Inflammation can be caused by hormonal imbalances, poor diet (sugar, bad fats, gluten, etc.), stress, toxicity, and viruses.

A study done by Washington University School of Medicine, found that the most aggressive breast cancer tumors were responding to anti-inflammatory drugs.  When they used anti-inflammatory medications with the most aggressive breast cancer tumors, they were able to slow down the growth and spreading of the Cancer.

Understand that these drugs take a heavy toll on your liver, your kidneys and your immune system.  A natural alternative to anti-inflammatory meds could be the consumption of Curcumin, Omega 3, Proteolytic Enzymes, Aloe Vera and Ginger.  I talk a lot in my office with many patients on the benefit of following an anti-inflammatory diet.  This is where you consume a lot of healthy fats (coconut oil, avocados, wild caught Pacific fish), minimal to moderate proteins, and healthy carbs (mainly veggies, cruciferous greens – kale, spinach and raw nuts and seeds).  You will want to also stop eating pro-inflammatory foods like sugar, heavy carbs (breads, pasta, etc.), gluten and bad fats.  Also, performing Intermittent Fasting is one of the best ways to help decrease inflammation, stimulate immune system and help your body to heal, repair and regenerate.

What Your Doctor Never Told You…

 

You were taught how to drive a car, how to perform your job but were you ever given the manual on how your body works?  Your body is the only body you will have in this lifetime, so you should learn how it works, how to maintain it and treat it well or it will fall apart and shorten your lifespan.

Your brain and spinal cord run, coordinate, control, harmonize and govern every aspect of your health and your existence. God put the most amazing healing power in the brain and spinal cord. 4. Get plenty of rest. SLOW DOWN and stop killing yourself. The reason your body is expressing health is because you have run it down and now it must try to mend itself in spite of you. Sleep a little, it won’t kill ya!

5. Drink plenty of clean water. ½ your body wt. in ounces is a good place to start. Add a veggie smoothie with kale, spinach and lemon. This will help with cleansing and detoxification. Stop eating sugar or anything that turns to sugar. Sugar is fertilizer for bacteria, viruses, yeast, mold, cancer, and dis-eases of all kinds.

6. Let your symptoms express themselves. Coughing, sneezing, headaches, shivering, diarrhea, etc. are all lifesaving mechanisms and are aiding in cleansing & detoxifying poisonous waste from your body. Symptoms are the way your body heals itself!

7. Once you have your strength back, get moving! Movement will help in lymphatic drainage which aids in cleansing. Getting on a trampoline and gently bouncing is a great way to boost your immune system and push out toxins.

Do You Know What Cancer Is?

     It’s October and ‘pink-time’ where many products, companies and organizations fly the pink ribbons to raise awareness for Cancer.  Awareness is a wonderful thing, raising money is a wonderful thing, trying to find a cure by these foundations has been nothing short of a failure.  In the eyes of the medical world, we are no closer to a ‘cure.’  In fact Cancer is a growing epidemic.  1 out of every 2 American men and 1 out of every 3 American women will develop Cancer at some point in their life.  Childhood Cancer is now the leading cause of death in American children affecting 1 out of ever 334 children.  And its only getting worse.

     When battling Cancer, you need to understand what it is.  Here is a brief synopsis:  We have over 60 trillion cells in our body always going through their own life cycles (birth-growth-death) each day.  In fact, reading this post, millions of your cells are dying but millions are being created.  This balance in our body, homeostasis helps keep everything in order and keeps our body functioning.  Their is an innate intelligence within our bodies that keeps this cycle going even when you are unaware of it.  Cancer is when the cells replicate and don’t die, this is apoptosis.  Typically the body’s innate intelligence allows for the immune system to function by seeking out these Cancer cells and destroy them.

     When the body is not functioning properly and the environment is ideal for Cancer growth, the Cancer cells begin to grow in numbers.  Cancer is common but not normal.    Cancer has been proven to be a metabolic disease, meaning that it is not controlled by genes, but by the decisions you make on a daily basis.  You have the choice whether or not to cultivate an environment ripe for Cancer growth or develop an environment to inhibit Cancer growth – you have the choice.

     What is the environment that grows Cancer cells?  It is one where a person consumes large amounts of sugar.  Cancer feeds off glucose (sugar), this was proven over 50 years ago by researchers.  A lifestyle deprived of aerobic exercise can cause a ripe environment for Cancer as it typically grows where Oxygen levels are depleted.  Having a weakened immune system can have less white blood cells circulating the body hunting down Cancer cells.  Having an improper biomechanics, like having a scoliosis in your spine inhibits your nerve supply from feeding the proper health, healing and innervation to specific organs and parts of the body.

     When you understand what Cancer is and what environment promotes its growth, you can then start taking action steps to prevent it and in some cases reverse it.  We have seen this within our very office.  We do not treat Cancer, but when the body has been restored bio-mechanically, we address a person’s nutrition and fitness – amazing things happen.  That body functions properly again and the innate intelligence takes over with health and healing.

Your Eventual Battle: Health-Care vs. Sick-Care

In my opinion, we live in the best country. We have access to the worlds best doctors, worlds best clinics / hospitals, worlds most advanced medical technology…but why does our Healthcare system suck? In one word answer – greed. Greed from the pharmaceutical companies, insurance companies and many hospital medical administrations.  When money is the ultimate goal and not the health of a patient – we have a serious problem.  
Last week a Pharmaceutical Company CEO admitted they are in business to make substantial profits and not health from their customers.  Then a few days later the country become stirred up when the Pharmaceutical company that makes Epi-pens dramatically raised their prices from $100 to $600.  
If we stopped chasing the bottom-line and acted based truly on Hippocrates oath “to do no harm” and obtain a results-driven mentality to healthcare – every American would step out of line of the local pharmacy and step into lines to visit their local organic farmer, gym center and local Chiropractor for Life-Enhancing Adjustments.
If our country was founded on the freedom of healthcare – our government would not have to mandate insurance. It would not be illegal to treat certain diseases with specified treatment protocols mandated by a small group.  For example, In the US Cancer can only be treated with radiation and chemotherapy.
We could be better educated on how to live a proper healthy lifestyle. We would not be sold garbage disguised as food in the supermarkets or in the ‘drive-thru’ establishments.
Most people are unaware that they live in a self-perpetuating Sick-care paradigm.  They wake up with little to no sleep, eat meals with little to no substance (vitamins, minerals) and are high in sugar, have a stressful job, do not exercise, take multiple medications to escape pain or in the hopes to treat a symptom, sit for most of the day (at home, in car, at work, etc.) and wonder why they lose their health in their 50’s or 60’s. or 70’s.  These people typically suffer with pain, dementia or have other health problems.
 
Our view of healthcare would morph from being ‘Sick-care Driven’ (the pursuit of eliminating symptoms to mask the true underlying problem of bodily dysfunction) to true ‘Healthcare Driven’ – the practice of prevention by utilizing:
1. Proper nutrition with vitamin/mineral rich foods that are organic, grass-fed and minimizes other man-made properties.
2. Proper fitness to create lean muscle, maximizing oxygen levels to all bodily tissues, recirculate the lymphatics and maintain a healthy BMI and Body Fat %.
3. Corrective Chiropractic adjustments helping to maintain proper biomechanics, improving immune functioning and bodily functioning free from nervous system interference
4. Maintaining a positive mental mindset based on love, empathy, respect, forgiveness and faith.
5. Minimize all possible toxins that may cause inflammation and weaken the body’s immune response and functioning. Toxins that we breathe, absorb or ingest whether directly or in-directly. Like like various chemicals, heavy metals, sugars and more.
 
Making decisions on these 5 essentials of a living a true ‘Health-care’ lifestyle allows this individual too have a life with better quality (less pain, diseases or health problems) and better quantity (more years).  These are the people in their 70’s and 80’s going on cruise ships and not stuck in nursing homes.  Where would you want to be?
Ultimately, you as an individual must decide what steps you will take to seek out and maintain your health.  Will you choose the Sick-care or Health-care approach?

Sugar – The Biggest Culprit in Disease Today

With it being Halloween, it is the perfect day for me to scare you with the truth about the devastating effects of consuming refined sugar. Especially on a day, where millions of children (and parents) ignorant of the truth, will take to the streets with wide-eyed dreams of endless handouts of free candy. This holiday makes the giver and receiver of the poison a warm feeling in their heart, whether or not they know the ill-health effects the sugar has on the child’s body. The effects can lead to a spiking the child’s blood sugar and increasing the child’s chances of developing malnutrition, diabetes, obesity, cancer, heart disease, leaky gut and more. Can you tell I have a grudge with sugar?

Maybe it was the fact that I grew up not knowing the effects of consuming large amounts of sugar and regretfully, I did on a daily basis. Maybe it was because my parents (as smart and loving as they were), didn’t know the dangers of sugar consumption. As if my many cavities at the time were not a sign!

Now, I would like to think that the times are different. For one, sugar has no benefits to our health – no protein, essential fats, vitamins or minerals and it can actually cause nutrient deficiencies. Sugar leads to a decrease in satiety, meaning one would keep eating to feel full – this shows how sugar consumption contributes to the obesity epidemic in our country. Consider this, in 1914 the average American consumed about 5 pounds of sugar a year. Today that number has ballooned to over 150 pounds per year! Imagine what stress that puts on your body. In fact, too much sugar causes insulin resistance, which leads to metabolic syndrome, obesity, high cholesterol and type II diabetes. Sugar consumption also leads to an increase of bodily inflammation and the development of cancer. Sugar can also cause lead to a fatty liver and the ill consequences this has upon the body, as large amounts of fructose (derivative when sugar is broken down) turn in to liver fat. Sugar consumption can be a reason why this next generation has been forecasted not to outlive their parents. Pretty scary stuff…even for Halloween, huh?

How has this crisis developed? Well, we can blame the food manufacturing companies for putting profits over the ethical and moral procedure of producing nutrient dense and organic foods, as seen by their mass production of foods (if you can call them foods) with high sugar content, GMOs, malnutritional elements (lacking vitamins and minerals). We can blame politicians for allowing these companies to be manipulative in the way these companies advertise their products and ingredients to be untruthful. But the best blame is upon us, the parents. The following is a diet that can be seen by millions of children across the country. This is the Standard American Diet also know as the S.A.D. nutritional approach. Yeah, pun intended.

We as parents, teachers and role models need to step up and say no to our children when they want that item with large amounts of sugar. Once you remove the sugar-laced food, do not blame the child if he or she starts crying or making a scene as sugar has a biochemical reaction in our body, that can be classified as an addictive element. Sugar consumption leads to a large dopamine release (this is the hormone that makes us feel good) and leads us to why we crave or become addicted to sugar. The way to avoid or decrease the child’s exposure to sugar is for you yourself to stop consuming it and remove the temptation.

In our household, we make a conscious effort to stock a lot of fruits, vegetables, nuts and foods that are healthy and nutritious. By avoiding the cookies and cakes, we allow ourselves to remove these items as an option when it comes time for a snack or dessert. Now I understand, this may seem like an idea that is insane or impossible for some, but if you perform this Kitchen Makeover you will see a transformation over time with your health and your family’s health. Yes, you will be met with anger, resentment and many questions at first by your family, but if you remain firm, smile and say this mantra each time:

“This is our new kitchen and pantry. For our families health and vitality!”

Yes, you can blame me for the cheesy line. But the goal is to transform your house and family to be as healthy as possible and that includes removing the biggest culprit in disease today … sugar!

The Benefits of Raw Honey

Honey has been used for centuries, not only for its sweetness but for its many healing properties. Raw honey contains natural antioxidants, flavonoids, enzymes, minerals (iron, zinc, potassium, calcium, magnesium, etc.) and vitamins (B6, thiamin, riboflavin, pantothenic acid and niacin). One tablespoon of raw honey has about 64 calories, but it has a healthy glycemic index – about less than consuming one banana. When consuming honey as a sweetener, it does not cause an elevation of insulin as white sugar does. Yet, Americans typically consume 1 lb. of honey in comparison to the unhealthy 150+lbs. of refined sugar and 62 lbs. of high fructose corn syrup.

As with most items today that are mass produced for profits and a long shelf-life, we have to be careful when choosing our bottled honey. Commercial honey is often heavily processed, chemically refined and pasteurized (this excessive heat destroys the natural enzymes, vitamins, and minerals in honey). Filtering and processing eliminates many of the beneficial phytonutrients including pollen and enzyme-rich propolis. The best way to achieve sparkling clear honey is by heat, so avoid the golden syrup-like honey in favor of opaque organic raw honey.

Research at the Texas A&M University’s Palynology Research Laboratory tested 60 honey products from supermarkets and found that 76% contained no trace of pollen (helps treat seasonal allergies). ‘Raw’ honey has not been heated, pasteurized or processed in any way that could rob it of any of the vital and beneficial nutrients and vitamins. In fact, pasteurized honey is just as unhealthy as eating refined sugar.

Raw honey has anti-viral, anti-bacterial, and anti-fungal properties. It promotes digestive health as it promotes good bacteria in the intestines. It is a powerful antioxidant, strengthens the immune system, blocks free radicals, reduces levels of homocysteine (aid in heart health) and helps with seasonal allergies.  It is best to purchase local-grown honey as the pollen will contain elements that will help your body during allergy season.

Raw honey has been found to stabilize blood pressure, balance blood-sugar levels, relieve pain and ulcers. Raw honey is an expectorant and anti-inflammatory that has been effective in treating respiratory conditions such like bronchitis and asthma.

Raw honey’s antibiotic properties are effective in treating colds and sore throats. Raw honey coats the throat and reduces irritation.  I will mix the raw honey with a small amount of cayenne pepper and one clove of minced garlic that will adhere to the throat’s lining and help fight off the infection.

For blocked sinuses, mix a teaspoon of honey in a pot of hot water, place a towel over your head and just inhale the steam for sinus relief. To treat allergies, take a teaspoon of raw honey a couple of times a day starting a few months prior to the allergy season.

Raw honey is also used as a remedy for skin wounds and infections by being applied topically. Honey-infused bandages are shown to aid in healing. Peter Charles Molan at the University of Waikato, New Zealand found that honey reacts with the body’s fluids to make hydrogen peroxide, creating an inhospitable environment for bacteria.

Treatments also include skin burns, rashes, and abrasions. Raw honey when applied overnight is also an effective treatment for acne and blemishes with rapid results. In fact, if you wash your face with raw honey, you may just see it leave you with sparkling, clean and soft skin.

The Journal of the Royal Society of Medicine sums up the benefits of raw honey, when stating: “The therapeutic potential benefits of pure, raw honey is grossly underutilized”. Research studies also show that replacing sugar with honey resulted in less weight gain and lower blood sugar levels. Raw honey can also help you start the day with more energy or aid in as a pre-workout food as it provides a supply of energy.

Varieties of Raw Honey
There are many varieties of honey, some of which are used to treat specific health conditions:
Manuka – Strong anti-bacterial properties. Helps colds, sore throats, indigestion, stomach ulcers, and acne.
Acacia – Liver cleanse, promotes intestinal health and reduces inflammation in the respiratory tract.
Buckwheat or Red Gum – Strong Antioxidant properties.
Eucalyptus – Prevent colds and headaches.
Linden – Sedative and antiseptic properties. Helps anxiety, insomnia, colds, coughs, and bronchitis.
Neem – Helps high blood pressure, diabetes, skin conditions, periodontal infections, throat infections and allergies.

Making Halloween Healthier

 

Halloween is right around the corner and I wanted to share my thoughts on how to make this holiday as safe, fun and memorable as possible … from a health stance, of course.

The kids want to go trick-or-treating, but you do not want them to consume a large amount of candy and sugar, right? Well, here is what our family has done over the years…

1. We let the kids decide what they want to do…For years, my kids would choose to experience Halloween and visit our neighbors homes with the excitement of collecting large amounts of candy, door to door. But, last year something amazing happened – my children decided (on their own) to forego the Halloween experience and make the choice to have a “Extra-Special Family Halloween Time.” We spent the night playing board games, watching a movie, eating organic popcorn and laughing all night long. We took breaks when the doorbell rang to give out – treats. We do not want to add the sugar-gluttony of the night, so we typically give non-food items. I recommend anything useful, simple and inexpensive – like the little tubs of Play-dough, pencils, notepads, etc.

2. Useful ways to get rid the sugar…When our kids did collect candy years ago, we would allow them to choose three of their favorites (limiting the amount of sugar) and use the “Switch Witch” game. This means that the children would place their candy outside of their room so that later that night, the ‘Switch Witch’ would visit and replace their candy with a special item (maybe a new toy, book or shirt). You can also donate the candy to many local fire stations or army offices to be sent to our troops overseas (although I prefer that our troops to eat healthier choices abroad).

3. You’re the adult, the children will listen … Sometimes people will say, “well that works for your family, but not mine”. Then the excuses come following. We need to stop this madness – just because almost every other child is stuffing themselves with candy from October 31st to November 6th is not a valid excuse to allow your kids to consume a large amount of (obesity-causing, diabetes-causing, heart disease-causing, cancer-causing) sugar. In fact, The Journal of Pediatrics in 2005 uncovered that the amount of sugars in your child’s diet is a major contributing factor to the rising in childhood obesity rates. Of the 5,000 children (ages 2-5) that were studied, the research found that the results of the study confirmed that the more added sugars kids ate, the less they benefited from key nutrients such as fiber, protein, calcium, iron and folate.

What are the U.S. statistics? Well here are the facts you need to tell yourself when you remain strong and take the candy away:

a. According to the Wold Health Organization (WHO) in 2013, the U.S. is the third-worst mortality rate by nutritional deficiencies and has the highest absolute age-adjusted mortality rate amongst all developed nations.
b. This new generation is now forecasted to be the first generation not to outlive their parents due to the current dismal health of our children.
c. The CDC states that Childhood obesity has more than doubled in children and quadrupled in adolescents in the past 30 years. In 2012, more than one third of children and adolescents were overweight or obese.
d. The CDC states that Type 2 diabetes in children and adolescents already appears to be a sizable and growing problem among U.S. children and adolescents. Health care providers are finding more and more children with type 2 diabetes, a disease usually diagnosed in adults aged 40 years or older.
e. All of this even when we spend the most amount of money on healthcare compared to any other developed country
