Benefits of Bone Both Protein

Ever wonder why our grandparents recommended Chicken soup for what ails you?  Well, now we know – it wasn’t the chicken soup per say, but the chicken bones simmering in the pot that leached out very healthy compounds that boosted the consumer’s immune response.  Today, most commercial chicken soups are made on a mass level with little to no bones left in the broth.  Also many soups are also heated to such high temperatures that all the ‘good stuff’ becomes denatured and ineffective in the body (think of pasteurization).

Simply put, all bone broths — beef, chicken, fish, lamb and more — can be found in traditional diets of almost every culture.  Why?  Because bone broth meals are nutrient-dense, they are easy to digest, rich in flavors and they boost the healing process.  Bone broth has been found to help joint issues, gut issues, maintains healthy skin, support immune functioning, detoxes,

Our ancestors made use of every part of an animal when it came to consumption.  Bones, marrow, skin, feet, tendons and ligaments are animal parts that you can’t eat directly, but can be boiled and simmered over a few days.  This simmering causes the bones and ligaments to release collagen, proline, glycine and glutamine (all have healing properties when consumed) and can transform your health.

The nutrition researchers, Sally Fallon and Kaayla Daniel of Weston A. Price Foundation, explain how bone broths contain minerals in forms that your body can easily absorb.  These include calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, silicon, sulphur and others. Also included are chondroitin sulfate and glucosamine – compounds found to reduce inflammation, arthritis and joint pain.

A study of chicken broth soup by the University of Nebraska Medical Center found it beneficial for colds and the flu. Researchers also found that it reduced inflammation in the respiratory system, improved digestion, helps with allergies, asthma and arthritis.

Fallon explains that many store-bought “stock and “broth” soups today aren’t “REAL.”  These companies use lab-produced meat flavors in bouillon cubes, soup and sauce mixes.  Some manufacturers even use the neurotoxin, monosodium glutamate (MSG).

It is far better to make real bone broth yourself at home.  It is best to use grass-fed bones from your local butcher, farmers market or from an online health food store.

By drinking bone broth or using it in recipes, you can help improve a healthier gut while reducing  inflammation.

If you don’t have the time to make your own home-made bone broth meal, our office has Bone Broth Proteins that will allow you consume it as a drink or mixed in with meals from home.  We are one of the few areas in metro Atlanta that offers the Dr Josh Axe recommended ( www.DrAxe.com ) Ancient Nutrition Bone Broth Protein.

Sitting Disease & Computer Ergonomics to Save You

A study in 2013 (by Ergotron) found that 70% of all Americans have to sit all day at work.  When you combine the hours working with hours watching tv, playing games and lounging – that is a total of an average of 13 hours a day and sleeping an average of 8 hours resulting in a sedentary lifestyle of around 21 hours a day!  While Americans know about the importance of exercise, only 31 percent go to the gym.

The survey also found that the vast majority (93 percent) didn’t know what “Sitting Disease” is, but 74 percent believe that sitting too much could lead to an early death.  The term “Sitting Disease” has been coined by the scientific community and is commonly used when referring to metabolic syndrome and the ill-effects of an overly sedentary lifestyle.  Also in 2013, the American Medical Association adopted a policy recognizing potential risks of prolonged sitting and encouraging employers, employees and others to make available alternatives to sitting.

“Research is showing links between sedentary lifestyles and diabetes, several types of cancer, obesity and cardiovascular disease,” said Jane Payfer, an Ergotron spokesperson. “There is a significant opportunity for people to change their behavior in the workplace and for corporations to change their cultures. Standing increases energy, burns extra calories, tones muscles, improves posture, increases blood flow, reduces blood sugar levels and ramps up metabolism. Frequently overlooked, standing more is the simplest, easiest change someone can make.”  The World Health Organization (in 2015) stated that prolonged sitting, meaning sitting for eight to 12 hours or more a day, increased your risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 90%.

So how do we combat ‘Sitting Disease’?

With proper computer ergonomics.  Working at a computer for long periods of time causes strain to our bodies, especially our spine, and results in many nerve system problems.  People at work or children at home who spend a lot of time on computers may be putting their health at risk due to an overload of stress to their spine.  Here are some practical tips that can reduce some of the spinal stress.

  • Take breaks from sitting throughout the day to walk around.
  • Invest in a standing work desk or one that converts from sitting to standing.
  • Exercise during your lunch break, even just walking around to promote movement, cardio and fitness.
  • Set your chair height so that your forearms are at a right angle to the upper arm and your wrist is straight. Your upper arm should hang comfortably at the side of your body.
  • Adjust the backrest of your chair to support your lumbar spine. Relaxed muscles will not fatigue over time.
  • Place a footrest under your desk so that you are leaning back into your chair, this prevents tension in the mid to upper back. This is very important because these are the nerves that control your heart, lung and stomach function.
  • Your knees should be level or slightly higher than your hips, so you may have to adjust your seat tilt. This helps to prevent swelling in the feet and calves and reduces pressure on your sciatic nerves.
  • Be sure to use a glare reducing screen and have no bright lights behind you or in front of you. Also, if your screen faces a window and the view is filled with sunlight at certain times of day, close your blinds or draw the curtains to decrease eyestrain.
  • Your eye level should be at the top or within the top half of your screen. Many people have their screen height too low, so grab some old telephone books and prop yours up if you need to.
  • Use a vertical copy stand to reduce tension in the neck and place it directly beside the screen.
  • Your mouse should be right beside the keyboard. If you have a keyboard tray and the mouse doesn’t fit, extensions are available.  This is a good investment because if you’re reaching for your mouse all day, you’re subluxated.
  • The distance between your wrists and your screen should be about 15 inches. Any more and you’ll be tempted to lean in.
  • The distance from your eye to the top of your screen should be 18-24 inches. Don’t sit too close and don’t sit too far away.
  • Have regular spinal check ups. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

High Blood Pressure and Chiropractic

High blood pressure affects approximately 25% of adults in North America.  Of these, 75% have only mildly elevated blood pressure, which lends itself to control through proven natural means.  Patients with high blood pressure have serious risk for heart attack, stroke and severe kidney damage if left uncontrolled.  Therefore, it is imperative that all patients put into place the appropriate measures to regulate their blood pressure into the normal and safe range.

Since we know that blood pressure medication can have serious adverse effects to other aspects of our health, looking for a natural approach is what more and more people are doing.  What is too commonly left out of the equation is the fact that specific dietary practices, natural supplements, spinal adjustments (JMPT 1988; 11:484-8) and lifestyle changes (exercise, quit smoking, weight loss) are proven strategies that can lower blood pressure.  In cases of mild to moderate high blood pressure these lifestyle changes have been shown to eliminate the need for drugs or to substantially reduce the required dose.

This is of great importance because blood pressure drugs often produce undesirable side effects such as fatigue, dizziness, elevated cholesterol, male impotence or erectile dysfunction, liver and kidney disease, and much more.

NATURAL AND LIFESTYLE MODIFICATIONS

Proven methods to lower blood pressure naturally include:

  • Chiropractic treatment
  • Weight loss
  • Endurance exercise; even a brisk walk for 45 minutes per day, 4 times per week can make a difference.
  • Limit alcohol intake to one drink per day.
  • Reduce intake of salt and heavily salt-processed foods.
  • Eat at least five fruit and vegetable servings per day.
  • Eat fish three or more times per week.
  • Natural supplements i.e.: Coenzyme Q10, Hawthorn extract, flaxseed oil, Calcium-Magnesium. With the aid of a nutritional analysis many people have gained life-changing knowledge.

Headaches and Chiropraactic

Studies have shown that roughly a third of all people suffer from headaches.  The causes of headaches are many; they include such things as spinal misalignment, certain foods, toxic fumes, preservatives and alcohol.  Spinal misalignments (subluxations) are shown to be involved in up to 80% of all headaches.

Unfortunately, our society in the past has taken numerous drugs to fight off the pain associated with headaches, instead of trying to remove the cause of these headaches.  However, we are moving into a time where society is starting to look for the causes.  Utilizing natural approaches, chiropractors are capable of removing headaches, or dramatically reducing the occurrence and frequency of these headaches.

When there is a loss of the normal range of motion of the vertebrae in the upper neck region, nerves that feed either the front, sides, back, or top of the head are impinged.

Recent research at the University of Odense, Denmark and Harvard Medical School has shown that chiropractic treatments can dramatically decrease the frequency and length of headaches as well as the number of painkillers needed for relief.  With a proper spinal examination, a chiropractor is able to determine if someone has spinal subluxations and nerve blockage to the head region.

If you are tired of suffering from headaches on an ongoing basis and you want to find out what the cause is, try the natural chiropractic approach.  Besides spinal care, chiropractors will look at the need for nutritional changes, stress management, stretching, and food sensitivity testing.

As we move into the next decade, there is a trend developing where people are looking for the cause of their health problems.  As a result, the profession of chiropractic will continue to grow at a fast pace, allowing it to continue its quest to have the world heal naturally.

Fibromyalgia and Chiropractic

Fibromyalgia is a syndrome that combines pain, fatigue, anxiety, and depression.  New research suggests that this syndrome is caused by imbalances of chemicals and hormones in the nervous system that amplify sensation, making even a slight touch feel painful.

In a recent study, Daniel Clauw MD, a rheumatologist at the University of Michigan, used MRIs to show what happens in the brains of fibromyalgia patients in response to minimal pressure to their left thumbs.  He showed that to receive the same brain response from healthy people you have to apply twice the pressure, showing that fibromyalgia patients are extremely sensitive to touch.

In other studies it has been shown that nerve interference such as Vertebral Subluxations cause nerves to be extremely sensitive and alter the chemicals and hormones within the nervous system.   The subluxation itself is something that the person in incapable of feeling.

Some type of trauma early in life will create the existence of Subluxations (which are not felt), and later in life a person is exposed to some type of “trigger”.  The trigger can be something that is chemical in nature like moulds or other airborne toxins, it can be an emotional stress, or it can be a physical stress that sets off the negative health effects of the Subluxations.

It has been known for a long time that Chiropractic adjustments reduce the sensitivity found in fibromyalgia patients and allow them to live a better quality of life with less pain and increased function.  This is one explanation to help people understand why Chiropractic continually helps people who suffer from fibromyalgia.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome & Chiropractic

With the explosion of technology over the last 30 years (smartphones, tablets, laptops and personal computers), it is no wonder that we are seeing a rise with Carpel Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) cases.  CTS is also called “Repetitive Trauma Disorder” or “Overuse Syndrome”.  It occurs when the median nerve of the wrist is irritated or compressed, many times by the subluxation of the carpal bones.

The wrist is formed by 8 carpel bones with some creating a tunnel like structure (the carpal tunnel).  Through this tunnel, the median nerve and 9 tendons pass through.  Symptoms of CTS include pain, numbness and/or tingling, and weakness of the wrist, hand, and fingers.  Sometimes it is so severe that it will awaken the sufferer during the night.  CTS can affect anybody that does repetitive tasks with their hands i.e.:  secretaries, carpenters, computer workers, musicians, assembly line workers or anyone who uses the previously said technologies on a consistent basis.

The medical approach for CTS has included drugs, cortisone, splints, and surgery, yet all have shown a poor success rate.  As a result of the poor medical outcomes, Robert Mendelsohn, M.D. concluded:  “Since the medical treatment for this condition is so often unsatisfactory, I have for years been recommending that my patients consult muscle and joint therapy specialists (like Chiropractors).”

A number of researchers who found spinal nerve root irritation in patients which had carpel tunnel or ulnar-neuropathy have documented the relationship between spinal health and carpel tunnel syndrome.  Other researchers have shown that nerve compression in the neck can block the flow of nutrition to the nerves in the wrist.  This will increase the chance of injury.  Yet another researcher found that out of 1,000 cases of CTS a large number of these sufferers had bad neck arthritis, thus supporting the connection that in many cases – the issues of the sufferer does not stem from the wrist, but from the neck.  We have see hundreds of these cases in our clinic over the years.  A patient will come in with CTS symptoms and with Chiropractic adjustments of the Cervical Spine, the patient’s symptoms reduce or are eliminated.  Our success rate of CTS has been so high, I often wonder how this may be the case for the poor medical outcomes – as they treat the symptoms of CTS (wrist) and we find the cause (cervical spine subluxation correction).

The treatment by a Doctor of Chiropractic is to perform a gentle and specific Adjustment to gently realign the cervical spine or one of the subluxated eight bones (the scaphoid specifically is the most common subluxated carpal bone)of the wrist to reduce the never interference, irritation and swelling.  When the swelling decreases, so do the carpal tunnel symptoms.  With proper care, the bones and nerves to the wrist and the neck will function properly for many years to come.  Chiropractic treatment for this ailment is often a first choice because it is non-invasive, gentle, drug free, and surgery free.  The aim of the treatment is to move the joints into position so they can work as they were designed to and allow your nerves to function with no interference.  Once the joints are properly aligned, the stress in the area is lessened and the pain and numbness are relieved.

In light of what is known about CTS, anyone suffering from it should see a chiropractor to ensure that their spine is free of spinal subluxations.  A chiropractic spinal adjustment may make the difference between a pain free wrist and spinal surgery.

Asthma and Chiropractic

During an asthmatic attack the bronchioles become swollen, go into spasm and fill with mucus.  Asthmatics feel as if the lungs are being strangled.  They struggle to get air into their lungs and once in, the air is trapped behind the mucus and then it’s nearly impossible to exhale!  Asthmatics struggle for every breath, literally gasping and wheezing for life.

The standard medical approach offers no cure for asthma, bronchitis or emphysema.  Patients are told to avoid physical or emotional irritants and given temporary relief with drugs like cortisone and bronchodilator inhalers.  These drugs may cause severe side effects including addiction.  Sadly, heavy uses of common asthma drugs have been linked to a greater risk of death for asthmatic patients.  Many people with respiratory ailments feel condemned to a lifetime of taking drugs.  Others are looking for a better way, and are turning to the drugless healing of Chiropractic.

Chiropractic benefits for asthma and respiratory problems are becoming more common place in our society as more and more people are experiencing the positive effects from care.

A Chiropractor’s objective is to first locate all areas of nerve interference (which is caused from Subluxations) and then set a plan to remove them all.  Many times this nerve interference is directly correlated to the nerve supply needed for lung function.

The fact that nearly half of all children with asthma will become symptom free before they become adults (“they grow out of it”) demonstrates that the body has a natural healing ability which is capable of affecting the course of the disease.  There is an intimate connection between the spinal column, the nervous system and our lungs.  We have an innate intelligence within our nervous systems that continually regenerates our bodies only if the messages can travel from the brain through our spine and to the rest of our body.

If you or a family member suffers with asthma and would like the opportunity to stop the chronic use of drugs call us to begin living a healthier life.
