You Are What You Eat

There are four cornerstones to having health naturally:

  1. Proper nerve supply
  2. Regular exercise
  3. Sufficient rest and
  4. Proper nutrition.

This article is deals with the issue of: WHAT IS PROPER NUTRITION? AND DO WE GET IT?

In our society of fast food, prepared foods, processed foods, we are faced with a growing problem of under-nourishment.  Our food is continually being sold to us in more variety of ways that are increasingly deficient in nutrients i.e. vitamins, minerals, and food enzymes.

To have a diet that is 100% in quality and satisfies your body’s needs 100%, you have to have a diet that is 100% natural.  A diet needs to be all whole foods, foods that comes from what grows in the ground or from what walks upon the earth.  These foods must be 100% natural, no herbicides or pesticides, no foods that have been filled with repetitive doses of antibiotics or steroids.  If what you are eating has added salt, sugar, food colouring and fat, then you are eating foods that are deficient in vitamins and minerals.

NUTRITION IS SIMPLE!  If we eat only natural foods that have not been tampered with, we receive all the nutrients we were designed for.  Unfortunately, for the vast majority of Americans, that is far from the truth.  So many people eat and drink foods that have been altered, so that they no longer have the proper balance of nutrition.

No doubt, the decreased quality of our food has happened because of the marketing of more desirable foods that are supposedly quicker to prepare and have better taste.  We have entered a time in today’s world that has spiralled out of control.  We need to think seriously of our direction with nutrition if we want to decrease the health problems that have been created because of our failing nutrition.  The surgeon general in the United States has said that 80% of disease is caused by improper nutrition.  That should sound the alarm in every household.

Foods like pop tarts, doughnuts, many breakfast cereals, pizza pockets, most fried foods, and drinks like pop, sunny delight, have next to no nutrition value and are harmful to our health.

Whatever happened to people eating apples, bananas, oranges, carrots and broccoli?  Preparing foods that contain whole foods are easy and full of taste.  Preparing healthy lunches for our children will make a big difference in how they learn and play at school.  It will make a very large difference in their overall development.  Think about this, healthier lunches are less expensive to purchase than the unhealthy ones.

The Triangle of Life

In my office, many times I demonstrate health by using the simple shape of a triangle.  Friends say I should use a square as it has four equal sides and angles to demonstrate the ultimate equilibrium or homeostasis of the body, functioning and the subsequent result of health.  The four corners could be likened to the four pillars of health (nutrition, fitness, body biomechanics and positive mindset).   Other friends say I should use the circle as in life, everything comes ‘360’ meaning if you eat crap, move like crap or treat your body like crap –  you yield sickness, disease and a early demise.

In support of the triangle, I propose life and health are simpler than a square and a circle.  How so?  Well, in my 12 years of private practice I have found that patients are either moving towards health or away from health.  There is no middleground.  There is no plateau.  It is that simple.  Your moving up or down – it’s based on your life choices.

If you take care of your health: upwards movement from the base (time), you will have a larger peak.  That is until God decides to take you home (ultimate decline) of which you can not stop.  Now you can make your triangle as big as you want which would equal a better quality and quantity of health and life.  Otherwise a life of poor choices will typically have a smaller triangle of life compared to your optimal potential triangle.  Meaning that the better you care for yourself the closer you will reach the largest size of your optimal potential triangle.

I believe God wants you to achieve this.  However every decision of ill health, will cut your apex earlier and cause a steady decline and ultimately shortening your triangle’s base (time on this Earth).

Am I getting too deep for you?

Good.  Now what if you choose to ignore health and ‘just live your life?’  In fact, if you choose to ignore your health – that itself is a choice of self destruction.  We were created to eat, move and prosper.  We were not created to stay static and motionless.  Yet if you eat garbage, have a sedentary lifestyle and ignore the maintenance of your body, your triangle will most definitely shrink.

What if you compare your triangle to another person’s triangle?  Guess what?  This doesn’t work, because only God can gauge the optimal triangle potential of each person. Thus forget comparing yourself to others and focus on being the best YOU possible.  Keep moving forward, upward and make your Triangle of Health as large as you possible can!

Benefits of Intermittent Fasting

Intermittent Fasting has been a very popular topic in my office with my patients for several years and it seems it’s now gaining traction especially for my dieters in ketosis.  Many are using it to lose weight, regain health and simplify their nutritional lifestyle.  In fact many studies show IF’s many benefits on the body, brain and overall vitality.  Here is what you need to know when it comes to Intermittent Fasting.

First, it should be noted as beneficial as IF can be for most people, some people should seek out approval from their qualified health care professional as studies have shown that IF may have risks with people with diabetes, problems with blood sugar regulation, low blood pressure, underweight, history of eating disorders, pregnant or breast-feeding women, and the use of certain medications.

Intermittent fasting is an eating pattern that cycles between periods of fasting and eating.  On a basic level, it does not say anything about which foods you should eat, but rather when you should eat them.  However with my patients, we have them use foods specified in our Advanced eating plan or Diet protocol.  We utilize the daily 16 hour intermittent fasting method with our patients.  Cutting our unnecessary sugars and carbs and filling your diet with plenty of veggies, cruciferous greens, essential healthy fats (coconut oil and grass-fed butter), and pasture-raised / organic animal proteins is a great start.

Since most people sleep 7-8 hours, performing the fast at night tends to be easier.  In fact when you break down the word ‘breakfast’ it literally means the break of a nightly fasting.  Having your dinner meal around 6pm would lead your breakfast meal around 10am.  You can move the hours up and down to fit your lifestyle and schedule.

When you fast, your body changes hormone levels like Human Growth Hormone (HGH) to rise and Insulin levels to drop – helping to make stored body fat more accessible.  The fat-burning hormone, Norepinephrine also is turned on helping in aiding in fat loss.  Fasting also allows for the cellular repair processes to occur.  Finally, it has been found that genetic expression of specific genes linked to longevity and disease prevention are turned on.

By fasting for 16 hours and then eating properly for the other 8 hours helps to limit caloric intake and can aid in weight loss as well.  Short-term fasting has been found to also help increase your metabolic rate with the changes in hormones.

Some studies show that IF can help reduce inflammation (the culprit of many chronic diseases), LDL cholesterol, triglycerides, blood sugars and insulin resistance.  These are all risk factors for heart disease.

Many are finding fasting easier as it actually simplifies your lifestyle by reducing the worried endless choices of meals, meal preparation can be easy and it keeps you healthy and energetic.

Need A Chiropractor from the Holidays?

ewc_christmas-stress

The holiday season can be a stressful time for most people.  It is a time of family, fun and faith.  With so much to be grateful for, it is also very easy to get caught up in everything and forget to take care of your family’s and your own health.  One example, is if you place others first on occasion it can be beneficial, but when it is constant, the toll on your body and health can be detrimental.  Here are our top ten reasons to visit your Chiropractor during the Holiday Season:

  1. Holiday Stress –  Buying gifts for your loved ones, decorating the house, planning travel arrangements, cooking up a feast, handling family drama, and more all while you live your day to day responsibilities (kids, housework, work, etc.).  It is no wonder why Holiday stress is number one!  Your body deals with stress by tensing up, headaches, neck pain, back pain, jaw pain, stomach aches, etc.  Many people “throw their back out” around the holidays from shoveling snow, stress, shopping too much without taking care of their body.  You need to put yourself first, address the cause and get adjusted routinely to treat and prevent injuries. Chiropractic is a powerful tool to keep your body functioning, pain relief and improved health.
  2.  Travel –  Whether you plan on traveling in a car for long period of time, bad weather, heavy traffic, long lines at the airports, pressure changes on the plane, sleeping in strange beds, carrying heavy bags…it all takes a toll on your spine. The list goes on and on, but chiropractic is great for helping treat injuries brought on by wear and tear from traveling!
  3. Colds & Flu – Tis the season for the sniffles and chills. With the change of weather, your body has to re-adapt to the new ‘climate’ this puts a tax on your immune system and if it is not functioning at its peak – symptoms will start to show themselves.  Keep your immune system at its highest with routine Chiropractic care.
  4. Holiday Text Neck –  As Christmas gifts or as traveling companions – our smart phones, tablets and other hand-held devices will be used a lot – by children and adults.  Prolonged use can cause strains, sprains and subluxations in the neck and upper back.  Routine Chiropractic care can help alleviate these symptoms.
  5. Lack of Nutritional Choices – With all the Holiday parties and get-togethers filled with cookies, cakes, breads and other unhealthy items loaded with sugar and carbs – it’s no wonder many people gain weight around the Holidays!  Keep making healthier choices by filling up on veggies, green leafy salads and high quality animal proteins and limit those Holiday goodies.  Regular office visits will help with any sluggish digestive issues as your nervous system directly affects all organ functions in the body including the stomach and intestines. If the communication between the brain and stomach or intestines are not running smoothly, our digestion can slow down.  Adjustments can get your bowels running smoothly again and help keep you regular throughout the winter.
  6. SHOPPING! – I know most of you do not want to hear this, but by over-doing it when you are shopping, carrying large bags and boxes that are too heavy for you can cause shoulder, neck, back and elbow pain. Standing on concrete floors at large stores for long periods of time can cause back pain and knee pain. Also loading and unloading heavy boxes into your back seat can throw your back out.  For all you ‘Online Shoppers’ you can get hand and wrist pain as well as neck and back pain for prolonged computer use.  Be careful when shopping to avoid injury, but know that your chiropractor can help with any shopping-related injuries!
  7. Decorating – Let’s face it, cutting down the tree, hauling it, setting it up, lifting heavy boxes out from the basement, putting up the lights on the house, bending, lifting, setting up decorations with circus-like acrobatics can put a lot of stress on your body!  Decorating itself can cause some injuries if we are not careful. Don’t be a Christmas Casualty this year.
  8. Shoveling – Here in the south, the chances of a white Christmas are small, but for many who live up north, they can injure themselves from using bad form while shoveling snow.  Wet, heavy snow can really be damaging, especially when bending and twisting.  It is important to have an good form, a ergonomic shovel, and common sense.  If it is too much for you – hire the kid down the street or wait for it to melt.   If you do injure yourself, make sure to see a Chiropractor sooner rather later to avoid long-term disabilities.
  9. You Love Your Family and Yourself – I know I see the world differently than you.  Chiropractic has changed my life and health.  I see it help hundreds of people each week.  From seemingly minor issues (aches and pains) to amazing miracles (infertility or a case that was dismissed by a local MD), we see success with Chiropractic care.  My whole family and I keep up our care because we want vibrant health, avoid injuries and keep our immune systems high.  Why would you NOT want the best for you or your family?  Seriously, if you buy organic food, work out and take care of yourself but do not get routine Chiropractic care – you are missing a big part of the puzzle without even knowing it.  You are worth it – so keep up your care.
  10. It Just Feels Good! – Sometimes, you just don’t need research, science or other reasons to validate your visit with us (we also have all that info if you want).  If you are busy baking, cooking, cleaning, shopping, hosting, shoveling and just want to pamper yourself, who cares?  Just do it!  Just visit us – it will help you feel great, more mobility, less inflammation, relaxing, de-stressing, releasing muscle tension and you feel pretty darn good afterwards. So give yourself a gift that feels great this Holiday season!

Detox Your Body to Better Health

ewc_detox_23421421

The process of a ‘Detox’ has been used by mankind since our early days.  Why?  Because we keep poisoning ourselves.  The Romans used lead to line water lines and tanks and today we use heavy metals in pipes, cheap paint, dental fillings and in many household products – even when it has been proven by research that too much lead, mercury and other heavy metals are toxic and carcinogenic.

Some toxins we can avoid, think of using a glass water bottle as opposed to a plastic water bottle where elements of the plastic can leach into the water and into your body.  Some toxins we can not avoid, think of air pollution, toxins inhaled inside the home like from paint, furniture and cleaners.  Since we can not avoid all toxins, it is important to conduct routine detox protocols to inhibit the effects of continual ingestion of many toxic chemicals.

There are two kinds of reactions to toxins in our bodies: acute and cumulative. Acute effects can be seen when heavy amounts of a toxin directly affect you all at once, such as spilling a pesticide onto your skin. The cumulative effect occurs when the toxin is constantly presented to your body in low levels, such as residue on your produce and the effects will hardly be noticed.

In recent years, experts are recognizing inflammatory illness as connected to toxin exposure. There are, of course, genetic tendencies for many illnesses, but it’s the epigenetic factors we’re considering with strategic detoxification.  The principle of epigenetics is that our genetic tendencies can be modified by external exposures and factors. So while you may have some predisposition to inflammatory disease, like fibromyalgia, you may also have some control over whether that predisposition is expressed sooner, later, or not at all.

An example of the problems with a slow and steady toxic exposure is found in a 2011 review on the cumulative exposure to lead. Elderly men with lead content in their blood were found to have lower cognitive function and memory ability, either from childhood exposure or from slow and steady exposures over time.

Metals aren’t the only risk, by any means. In an extensive study published in the Annals of Agri Bio Research in 2012, the effects of a long term buildup of pesticide exposure were listed as follows:

“…impaired memory and concentration, disorientation, severe depression, irritability, confusion, headache, speech difficulties, delayed reaction times, nightmares, sleepwalking, and drowsiness or insomnia.”

A leading cause of death and frightening proposition – the slow loss of memory and brain function – Alzheimer’s is a force to be reckoned with. And, yet again, while we often think of it as genetic, Alzheimer’s is another example of an illness triggered by environmental factors.

Chemicals are the main concern with Alzheimer’s disease, with a very recent study depicting the threat of “inhalation Alzheimer’s.” You won’t catch these illnesses like a virus spreading from a sneeze, but careless contact with the herbicides, pesticides, processing chemicals and other environmental pollutants build up in our bodies and brains over time, cutting our golden years painfully short.  Other conditions shown to have a large tie to toxic environmental factors like autoimmune disorders, cancer, diabetes, dementia disorders, obesity, leaky gut syndrome and much more.

Minimizing exposure to plastics, keeping indoor air clean, and buying organic are all simple but effective steps you can take to limit your family’s exposure to new and unproven substances.  How can we “detox” our bodies?  Here are a few examples:

  1. Clean Eating – eating the right foods doesn’t mean dieting; it means eating to support a healthy gut flora and a functioning detoxification pathway.  Eating anti-inflammatory meals like green leafy veggies, garlic, tumeric, Apple Cider Vinegar, cruciferous veggies, apples, green tea, milk thistle, cilantro, kimchi, almonds, coconut oil, wild-caught Alaskan fish and other grass-feed lean animal proteins are great sources.  Staying away from sugar, soda, juices, most dairy and most gluten-full breads will help cleanse the gut flora as well.
  2. Water – Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated, it helps flush toxins out of the body as a catalyst when you sweat or go to the bathroom.  We are upwards of 70% water, so keep your levels up.
  3. Proper Fitness – Exercise is not simply to improve size and shape; it’s to keep the circulatory system moving and flushing away toxins and disease.  High Intensity Training workouts are a great way to increase oxygen to many tissues and cells of the body.  Studies show that up to 36 hours after these workouts the body is still burning fat.
  4. Deep Breathing – Taking deep breathes will allow your body to take in optimal levels of oxygen and breathe out cellular waste (carbon dioxide).
  5. Chiropractic Adjustments – Treatments help boost your immune response, maintain optimal biomechanical function, lymph flow, decrease inflammation and improve mobility.
  6. Raise your Glutathione levels – Highest in your liver and kidneys, which are your body’s primary detoxification organs. Glutathione is important to your overall immune system, protecting your cells and mitochondria from the damaging effects of oxidative stress and helping keep inflammation at bay.

As we begin to detox our lives and our bodies, it’s important to remember that prevention is the best medicine. The best rule of thumb to create a lifestyle of minimal exposure is to stick as closely to nature as possible.

When in doubt, seek the guidance of a professional. Never attempt more dramatic detoxification measures without the oversight of a medical professional who is experienced and understands how to proceed.  If your concerns are simply lifestyle related, you can begin to work on the necessary diet, lifestyle, and supplement changes that can help your body get rid of the excess and overcome the exposure that remains.

The 9 Warning Signs You Desperately Need Vitamin D

3214323412432

More and more physicians are recommending their patients to take Vitamin D.  In fact, one of the most popular vitamins we sell in our clinic is our unique, highly potent and effective Vitamin D supplement.  We also have a sensational Vitamin D3 plus probiotics.  The reason we offer these products is because new research has shown the its importance and the debilitating symptoms of a vitamin D deficiency.

The term vitamin D, according to the Mayo Clinic’s Drugs and Supplements site (1), actually refers to several different forms of the vitamin, including D2, which comes from our diet, and D3, which is manufactured by our skin when exposed to sunlight. Vitamin D’s main purpose in the body is to regulate blood levels of calcium and phosphorous.

Known as the sunshine vitamin, as the suns ultraviolet rays helps synthesize vitamin D through our skin in our body.  While our skin does manufacture some of the vitamin D that we need daily, sun exposure alone is usually not enough. Factors such as the time of year, the angle of the sun, cloud cover, pollution levels and even the use of sunscreen can greatly limit the amount of D made by our skin.  We can ingest levels of vitamin D in our diet, it can be at highest concentrations from fatty fish such as tuna, mackerel and salmon.

Some people who have a vitamin D deficiency may have no immediate symptoms.  Those who do have symptoms may experience restless sleep, muscle cramps, general fatigue, joint pain, muscle pain or weakness, inability to concentrate, headaches, constipation or diarrhea, and bladder problems. Here are nine other serious medical conditions that have been linked to a vitamin D deficiency.

  1. Asthma – Vitamin D supplementation of 1,200 IU daily has been shown to lessen asthma attacks and reduce their severity.
  2. Depression – Vitamin D deficiencies have been linked to depression and other psychiatric illnesses. Even a woman getting enough D during pregnancy has been shown to lessen the chances that her unborn child will develop mental illness later in life.
  3. Heart disease – An article published in Molecular Nutrition & Food Research (2) reports that cardiovascular disease is much more common in people deficient in vitamin D. Some children, according to the article, with severe heart failure have also responded well to vitamin D treatment.
  4. High blood pressure – High blood pressure has been associated with deficiencies in calcium, magnesium, potassium and vitamin D.
  5. Rheumatoid Arthritis – RA is a devastating disease that causes systemic inflammation, severe pain and joint damage. Studies have shown that vitamin D can ease the pain and stiffness associated with RA.
  6. Multiple sclerosis – Studies have shown that geography matters when it comes to the odds of getting MS. The farther from the equator you live — and the less sun exposure you get — the more likely you are to develop the disease. This suggests a strong link between MS and vitamin D.
  7. Cancer – Several different kinds of cancer have been linked to D deficiencies, including breast cancer, prostate cancer and colon cancer. The causal link is so strong, in fact, that the Mayo Clinic (3) lists separate recommended dosing levels of the vitamin for both cancer prevention and prostate cancer treatment.
  8. Periodontal disease – This inflammation of the gums can cause pain, bleeding and tooth loss. Vitamin D helps in the formation of defensins and cathelicidins which, in turn, can lower the number of harmful bacteria in the mouth.
  9. Diabetes – An article from World’s Healthiest Foods (4) lists poor blood-sugar control as a symptom of vitamin D deficiency. This, in turn, can increase the risk of developing diabetes.

Your Eventual Battle: Health-Care vs. Sick-Care

EWC_Choices
In my opinion, we live in the best country. We have access to the worlds best doctors, worlds best clinics / hospitals, worlds most advanced medical technology…but why does our Healthcare system suck? In one word answer – greed. Greed from the pharmaceutical companies, insurance companies and many hospital medical administrations.  When money is the ultimate goal and not the health of a patient – we have a serious problem.
Last week a Pharmaceutical Company CEO admitted they are in business to make substantial profits and not health from their customers.  Then a few days later the country become stirred up when the Pharmaceutical company that makes Epi-pens dramatically raised their prices from $100 to $600.
If we stopped chasing the bottom-line and acted based truly on Hippocrates oath “to do no harm” and obtain a results-driven mentality to healthcare – every American would step out of line of the local pharmacy and step into lines to visit their local organic farmer, gym center and local Chiropractor for Life-Enhancing Adjustments.
If our country was founded on the freedom of healthcare – our government would not have to mandate insurance. It would not be illegal to treat certain diseases with specified treatment protocols mandated by a small group.  For example, In the US Cancer can only be treated with radiation and chemotherapy.
We could be better educated on how to live a proper healthy lifestyle. We would not be sold garbage disguised as food in the supermarkets or in the ‘drive-thru’ establishments.
Most people are unaware that they live in a self-perpetuating Sick-care paradigm.  They wake up with little to no sleep, eat meals with little to no substance (vitamins, minerals) and are high in sugar, have a stressful job, do not exercise, take multiple medications to escape pain or in the hopes to treat a symptom, sit for most of the day (at home, in car, at work, etc.) and wonder why they lose their health in their 50’s or 60’s. or 70’s.  These people typically suffer with pain, dementia or have other health problems.

Our view of healthcare would morph from being ‘Sick-care Driven’ (the pursuit of eliminating symptoms to mask the true underlying problem of bodily dysfunction) to true ‘Healthcare Driven’ – the practice of prevention by utilizing:
1. Proper nutrition with vitamin/mineral rich foods that are organic, grass-fed and minimizes other man-made properties.
2. Proper fitness to create lean muscle, maximizing oxygen levels to all bodily tissues, recirculate the lymphatics and maintain a healthy BMI and Body Fat %.
3. Corrective Chiropractic adjustments helping to maintain proper biomechanics, improving immune functioning and bodily functioning free from nervous system interference
4. Maintaining a positive mental mindset based on love, empathy, respect, forgiveness and faith.
5. Minimize all possible toxins that may cause inflammation and weaken the body’s immune response and functioning. Toxins that we breathe, absorb or ingest whether directly or in-directly. Like like various chemicals, heavy metals, sugars and more.

Making decisions on these 5 essentials of a living a true ‘Health-care’ lifestyle allows this individual too have a life with better quality (less pain, diseases or health problems) and better quantity (more years).  These are the people in their 70’s and 80’s going on cruise ships and not stuck in nursing homes.  Where would you want to be?
Ultimately, you as an individual must decide what steps you will take to seek out and maintain your health.  Will you choose the Sick-care or Health-care approach?

Eczema Natural Remedies

Eczema (atopic dermatitis) is a skin condition that is a chronic allergic condition where the skin may develop areas that become an irritating itchy or scaly rash. Eczema can occur on almost any part of the body but is most common on the face, scalp, inside of elbows, knees, ankles, and hands. It typically appears as extremely itchy patches on the skin. Eczema can get worse when scratched; in fact, itchy skin may appear normal until scratched; the irritating action may then cause the characteristic rash and scales to develop. Eczema is particularly common in infants and children. A person’s risk of developing the problem also increases if he or she has a family history of eczema or allergic conditions such as asthma and hay fever.

Eczema is caused by a reaction similar to that of an allergy and can promote chronic inflammation. The condition will often wax and wane and accompany other allergic conditions such as asthma. In some cases, a specific substance, such as certain soaps, detergents, or metals, dust mites, and animal dander, can trigger eczema. Eczema can be worsened by dry climates, exposure to water, temperature changes, and stress.

Individuals with this condition should make lifestyle changes to their diet, add moderate exercise and avoid environmental toxins (toxic detergents, household cleaners, etc.). Examples include eliminating chemically sprayed vegetables and fruits, processed foods, junk foods, sugars and artificial sweeteners. Minimizing stress also has been shown to help suppress exacerbations.

Here are some helpful natural remedies to help with eczema:

  1. Treat the Gastro-Intestinal lining (gut walls). This is done by consuming bone broth, healthy fats, probiotics and fermented foods. More info can be learned from Natasha Campbell-McBride’s book Gut and Psychology Syndrome.
  2. Probiotics and probiotic-rich foods help provide additional and benefitial gut bacteria and helps heal the intestinal walls. The probiotic rich foods include Kombucha, Keifer and Sauerkraut.
  3. Fermented Col Liver Oil – a great source of an essential fat. Taken as capsules or as a topical cream. Green Pasture Blue Ice Royal Cod Liver Oil is a brand that can be bought on Amazon.com.
  4. Omega 3 Foods – Increase with avocadoes, fresh and wild-caught salmon or tuna, eggs, organic raw nuts, and chia or flax seeds.
  5. Gentian Tincture – 10 drops before each meal helps the digestive system eliminate toxins that can irritate the skin.

Epsom Salt or Magnesium Flake Baths – If water is tolerable (for infants – you can pre-boil the water, let it cool and then use it as bath water), Add 1-2 cups of Epsom Salts or Magnesium Flakes, ½ cup of Sea Salt and the optional ½ teaspoon of vanilla extract and 10 drops of an essential oil like lavender or mint.
