Benefits of Bone Both Protein

The nutrition researchers, Sally Fallon and Kaayla Daniel of Weston A. Price Foundation, explain how bone broths contain minerals in forms that your body can easily absorb.  These include calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, silicon, sulphur and others. Also included are chondroitin sulfate and glucosamine – compounds found to reduce inflammation, arthritis and joint pain.

A study of chicken broth soup by the University of Nebraska Medical Center found it beneficial for colds and the flu. Researchers also found that it reduced inflammation in the respiratory system, improved digestion, helps with allergies, asthma and arthritis.

Fallon explains that many store-bought “stock and “broth” soups today aren’t “REAL.”  These companies use lab-produced meat flavors in bouillon cubes, soup and sauce mixes.  Some manufacturers even use the neurotoxin, monosodium glutamate (MSG).

It is far better to make real bone broth yourself at home.  It is best to use grass-fed bones from your local butcher, farmers market or from an online health food store.

Pediatrics, Parents and Posture

     Standing up straight is important for everyone, but at no time is it more crucial to develop the habits of good posture than in childhood.  Many adults with chronic back pain can trace the problem to years of bad posture habits or injuries in childhood.

Because they are growing and more active, children may be at even more risk for injury to the back and spine.  According to studies, there is a significantly high risk of injuries associated with sports and recreation.  More than 1/3 of all high school athletes sustain some type of injury.  Many childhood stresses and traumas lead to spinal and nerve dysfunction as we age.  Children that carry backpacks quite often create postural problems and regions of spinal dysfunction.

We also notice that children and teens that develop Scoliosis commonly develop it due to a lack of proper spinal maintenance.  Studies have shown that the children who have taken care of their spines with regular care have over 5 times fewer health problems than the average child.  They have fewer occurrences of scoliosis, ear infections, growing pains, and other health problems.  It is important to have your children’s posture checked and monitored as they age.

People who choose to neglect checking their posture may be in for a decrease in quality of life as they age.  Poor posture extracts a high price as you age because it can:

Limit your range of motion – muscles can be permanently shortened or stretched when a slumped over posture becomes your normal position.

  • Organs in your body become less effective – your lungs work at reduced capacity meaning less oxygen to your body, your digestive system has a harder time to function, and quite commonly cardiovascular health is compromised.
  • Your mental/emotional state can be affected – it is commonly known that people who are less capable of supporting their body properly have less energy, they have a harder time enjoying their day, and they are more commonly less active in life.

The Missing Link in Health Care

How to Live a Longer Life

     You are born to express physical, mental and spiritual health; to radiate vitality, harmony, peace, joy, optimism, strength, love and healing at any age.

But it rarely seems that way.  Disharmony, illness, disease, depression, fatigue, and emotional problems touch so many lives.  Too many of us walk this earth with our bodies, hearts and souls in pain.

Do-it-Yourself Bug Spray & Tick Repellent

Dr. Matt’s All Natural Homemade (Do-it-Yourself) Bug Spray & Tick Repellent:

Summer is here and so are the bugs.  Since we didn’t have a harsh winter to kill off a lot of insects, many are predicting a spike in insect infestations and tick bites this coming season.  As an avid hiker and outdoors family, we refuse to let the little critters stop us from having quality family time on the trails this summer break.  So I have put together my personal natural Bug Spray and Tick Repellent that does not have potential harmful chemicals like DEET in many store-bought bug sprays.

Dr. Matt’s Bug Spray:

  1. 1/2 cup of witch hazel
  2. 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar
  3. 40 drops of your choice or 1 or more of these essential oils: Citronella, Eucalyptus, Lemongrass, Peppermint, Rosemary or Tea Tree Oil)
  4. Pour contents into a 8 ounce spray bottle (glass preferably)
  5. Spray over the body especially ankles, wrists, neck and behind the ears.  Avoid eyes and mouth.

  1. Use Rose Geranium Essential Oil drops on ankles, wrists, neck and behind the ears.

Sitting Disease & Computer Ergonomics to Save You

     A study in 2013 (by Ergotron) found that 70% of all Americans have to sit all day at work.  When you combine the hours working with hours watching tv, playing games and lounging – that is a total of an average of 13 hours a day and sleeping an average of 8 hours resulting in a sedentary lifestyle of around 21 hours a day!  While Americans know about the importance of exercise, only 31 percent go to the gym.

The survey also found that the vast majority (93 percent) didn’t know what “Sitting Disease” is, but 74 percent believe that sitting too much could lead to an early death.  The term “Sitting Disease” has been coined by the scientific community and is commonly used when referring to metabolic syndrome and the ill-effects of an overly sedentary lifestyle.  Also in 2013, the American Medical Association adopted a policy recognizing potential risks of prolonged sitting and encouraging employers, employees and others to make available alternatives to sitting.

“Research is showing links between sedentary lifestyles and diabetes, several types of cancer, obesity and cardiovascular disease,” said Jane Payfer, an Ergotron spokesperson. “There is a significant opportunity for people to change their behavior in the workplace and for corporations to change their cultures. Standing increases energy, burns extra calories, tones muscles, improves posture, increases blood flow, reduces blood sugar levels and ramps up metabolism. Frequently overlooked, standing more is the simplest, easiest change someone can make.”  The World Health Organization (in 2015) stated that prolonged sitting, meaning sitting for eight to 12 hours or more a day, increased your risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 90%.

So how do we combat ‘Sitting Disease’?

With proper computer ergonomics.  Working at a computer for long periods of time causes strain to our bodies, especially our spine, and results in many nerve system problems.  People at work or children at home who spend a lot of time on computers may be putting their health at risk due to an overload of stress to their spine.  Here are some practical tips that can reduce some of the spinal stress.

 

  • Take breaks from sitting throughout the day to walk around.
  • Invest in a standing work desk or one that converts from sitting to standing.
  • Exercise during your lunch break, even just walking around to promote movement, cardio and fitness.
  • Set your chair height so that your forearms are at a right angle to the upper arm and your wrist is straight. Your upper arm should hang comfortably at the side of your body.
  • Adjust the backrest of your chair to support your lumbar spine. Relaxed muscles will not fatigue over time.
  • Place a footrest under your desk so that you are leaning back into your chair, this prevents tension in the mid to upper back. This is very important because these are the nerves that control your heart, lung and stomach function.
  • Your knees should be level or slightly higher than your hips, so you may have to adjust your seat tilt. This helps to prevent swelling in the feet and calves and reduces pressure on your sciatic nerves.
  • Be sure to use a glare reducing screen and have no bright lights behind you or in front of you. Also, if your screen faces a window and the view is filled with sunlight at certain times of day, close your blinds or draw the curtains to decrease eyestrain.
  • Your eye level should be at the top or within the top half of your screen. Many people have their screen height too low, so grab some old telephone books and prop yours up if you need to.
  • Use a vertical copy stand to reduce tension in the neck and place it directly beside the screen.
  • Your mouse should be right beside the keyboard. If you have a keyboard tray and the mouse doesn’t fit, extensions are available.  This is a good investment because if you’re reaching for your mouse all day, you’re subluxated.
  • The distance between your wrists and your screen should be about 15 inches. Any more and you’ll be tempted to lean in.
  • The distance from your eye to the top of your screen should be 18-24 inches. Don’t sit too close and don’t sit too far away.
  • Have regular spinal check ups. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

High Blood Pressure and Chiropractic

 

 

High blood pressure affects approximately 25% of adults in North America.  Of these, 75% have only mildly elevated blood pressure, which lends itself to control through proven natural means.  Patients with high blood pressure have serious risk for heart attack, stroke and severe kidney damage if left uncontrolled.  Therefore, it is imperative that all patients put into place the appropriate measures to regulate their blood pressure into the normal and safe range.

Since we know that blood pressure medication can have serious adverse effects to other aspects of our health, looking for a natural approach is what more and more people are doing.  What is too commonly left out of the equation is the fact that specific dietary practices, natural supplements, spinal adjustments (JMPT 1988; 11:484-8) and lifestyle changes (exercise, quit smoking, weight loss) are proven strategies that can lower blood pressure.  In cases of mild to moderate high blood pressure these lifestyle changes have been shown to eliminate the need for drugs or to substantially reduce the required dose.

Headaches and Chiropraactic

     Studies have shown that roughly a third of all people suffer from headaches.  The causes of headaches are many; they include such things as spinal misalignment, certain foods, toxic fumes, preservatives and alcohol.  Spinal misalignments (subluxations) are shown to be involved in up to 80% of all headaches.

Unfortunately, our society in the past has taken numerous drugs to fight off the pain associated with headaches, instead of trying to remove the cause of these headaches.  However, we are moving into a time where society is starting to look for the causes.  Utilizing natural approaches, chiropractors are capable of removing headaches, or dramatically reducing the occurrence and frequency of these headaches.

When there is a loss of the normal range of motion of the vertebrae in the upper neck region, nerves that feed either the front, sides, back, or top of the head are impinged.

Fibromyalgia and Chiropractic

     Fibromyalgia is a syndrome that combines pain, fatigue, anxiety, and depression.  New research suggests that this syndrome is caused by imbalances of chemicals and hormones in the nervous system that amplify sensation, making even a slight touch feel painful.

In a recent study, Daniel Clauw MD, a rheumatologist at the University of Michigan, used MRIs to show what happens in the brains of fibromyalgia patients in response to minimal pressure to their left thumbs.  He showed that to receive the same brain response from healthy people you have to apply twice the pressure, showing that fibromyalgia patients are extremely sensitive to touch.

In other studies it has been shown that nerve interference such as Vertebral Subluxations cause nerves to be extremely sensitive and alter the chemicals and hormones within the nervous system.   The subluxation itself is something that the person in incapable of feeling.

Some type of trauma early in life will create the existence of Subluxations (which are not felt), and later in life a person is exposed to some type of “trigger”.  The trigger can be something that is chemical in nature like moulds or other airborne toxins, it can be an emotional stress, or it can be a physical stress that sets off the negative health effects of the Subluxations.

It has been known for a long time that Chiropractic adjustments reduce the sensitivity found in fibromyalgia patients and allow them to live a better quality of life with less pain and increased function.  This is one explanation to help people understand why Chiropractic continually helps people who suffer from fibromyalgia.

Childhood Ear Infections & Chiropractic

 

     What is the most common reason parents bring their child to the doctor?  Ear infections.  This is an inflammation of the middle ear, usually caused by bacteria, that occurs when fluid builds up behind the eardrum.  Although adults can get ear infections, they are more common in children.  The National Institute of Health has said that Five out of six children will have at least one ear infection by their third birthday.

Let’s look at the anatomy to understand why an ear infection may occur.  Behind the ear is the Eustachian tube which are smaller and more level in children than they are in adults.  This can make it difficult for fluid to drain out of the ear, even under normal conditions. If the eustachian tubes are swollen or blocked with mucus due to a cold or other respiratory illness, fluid may not be able to drain.

From a biomechanical or Chiropractic view, the atlas (first cervical vertebra aka C1) has two side projections called transverse processes and when the Atlas (C1) is subluxated (spinal vertebra misaligned) can put pressure or partially block the Eustacian tube from draining as well.

One common question, I get from patients is, “Why would my young child have a subluxation?”  I respond it’s because they have a spine like adults, they are active (running, falling, bumps, etc.) and they went through the birth process which for some can be traumatic at times on a infants spine.  The overwhelming majority of newborns that I have checked for subluxation in my 12 years of practice have shown some type of subluxation – many times at C1.  Side note: Chiropractic care for newborns is unlike care for adults and is very safe, gentle and effective.  

When the Eustacian tube is blocked, bacteria can build up thriving off the build up of mucus that accumulated.  Research has shown that children get ear infections as a result of this improper drainage of the deep neck lymphatics.  This causes fluid build up, an inflamed and bulging ear drum, and a welcome habitat for bacteria.  Since a child’s immune system isn’t as effective as an adult’s because it’s still developing, this makes it harder for children to fight infections.

The medical approach has children using antibiotics, which with prolonged use can lead to future antibiotic resistance, gut flora problems that can lead to leaky gut and other GI issues and it makes the child more susceptible to other infectious diseases, allergies, obesity, and autoimmune disorders.  Even famous medical doctors like Dr. Sears has come out and recommended a restricted and limited use of Antibiotics.  Even, the Journal of the American Medical Association had a study that concluded that children who took Amoxicillin for chronic ear infections were up to 6 times more likely to have a recurrence of their ear problem than those who received a sugar pill.  Lead author Erdem Cantekin Ph.D. said “children are being abused by the antibiotic treatment in this country.”

Drug resistant strains of childhood ear infections are rapidly increasing.  Health officials say the trend is closely linked to doctors’ misuse of broad spectrum antibiotics.  It is now known that antibiotics can cause side effects and lead to the development of drug resistant bacteria that can cause a more serious disease.  Antibiotics are not the preferred option in the early stages of the condition.

A more natural approach of killing off bacteria is to restore nervous system function which results in normal drainage of the ears and lymphatics and a more normalized function of the immune system.  Doctors of Chiropractic specialize in restoring normal function of the spine and nervous system and have shown to have a good track record in dealing with children with chronic ear infections.  I have seen an incredibly high success rate in my own clinic in treating Childhood and Adult Ear Infections and each case was a subluxation of the Atlas (C1) that we removed the nerve interference for maximum healing and removed the blocking of the Eustacian tube for proper ear drainage.
